Epilepsy is more common than many realise — and often misunderstood.

Awareness isn’t just about recognition. It’s about support, management, and continuity of care.

At Specialist Medical Services Group, we support patients with:

✔️ GP-led care and ongoing monitoring
✔️ Medication management and care plans
✔️ Coordination with neurologists and specialists
✔️ Support for lifestyle, safety and long-term wellbeing

With the right care, many people with epilepsy live full, independent lives.

If you or a loved one needs support, start with a conversation.

WEDNESDAY SPECIALIST SPOTLIGHT

When it comes to children’s health, small concerns can quickly turn into big questions for families.

This week we’re introducing Dr Damian Lees, Paediatrician at SMSG.

Dr Lees commonly assists with developmental concerns, behavioural presentations, feeding difficulties, and general paediatric conditions that benefit from a more detailed and thoughtful assessment. He has a strong interest in developmental paediatrics, supporting children and families navigating areas such as learning, behaviour and developmental differences.

Many families are referred when something doesn’t feel quite right — even if it’s hard to clearly define.

During appointments, parents often notice his calm, engaging manner with children. He takes time to build rapport, observe interactions, and understand the broader context around a child’s development — while ensuring parents feel heard and supported throughout the process.

His approach is practical and reassuring, helping families better understand what they’re seeing, what it may mean, and what next steps could look like — whether that’s monitoring, further assessment, or connecting with additional supports.

Paediatric care isn’t just about diagnosis — it’s about guidance, clarity and ongoing support for both child and family.

Appointments with Dr Damian Lees are now available.

With Bowel Cancer Awareness Month approaching, it’s a good time to think about bowel screening and digestive health.

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia, but early detection through screening can significantly improve outcomes. Many adults will receive a National Bowel Screening Test kit, which can be completed easily at home.

If you’ve noticed ongoing digestive symptoms — such as changes in bowel habits, persistent bloating, or abdominal discomfort — it’s important to discuss this with your GP.

Your GP can review your symptoms, discuss screening options, and where appropriate arrange further assessment with our gastroenterology specialist for more complex digestive concerns.

Early conversations and screening play an important role in protecting long-term digestive health.

If you’re due for screening or have digestive concerns, consider speaking with your GP or asking about referral to our gastroenterology service.

WEDNESDAY SPECIALIST SPOTLIGHT

Heart symptoms don’t always arrive dramatically — sometimes they begin as subtle changes like breathlessness, chest discomfort, or unexplained fatigue.

This week we’re introducing Dr Jennifer Law, Cardiologist at SMSG.

Dr Law commonly assists patients with chest pain, palpitations, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular risk assessment. Many referrals come after symptoms appear during daily activities, or when routine tests suggest the heart may need closer evaluation.

One thing that makes Dr Law’s clinic particularly practical for patients is the ability to perform echocardiograms and cardiac stress testing on site, with a dedicated sonographer supporting these investigations. This often allows important diagnostic steps to happen more efficiently as part of the cardiology assessment.

During appointments, patients often notice her clear and structured approach. She takes time to review symptoms, test results and risk factors carefully, explaining what the findings may mean and outlining appropriate next steps.

Heart health can feel complex — but understanding your results and options should never feel confusing.

Appointments with Dr Jennifer Law are available.

Myth: “Reception can pass on my medical question to the doctor and get an answer for me.”

Fact: Reception teams help manage appointment schedules, bookings, referrals, and general enquiries — but they aren’t able to provide or relay medical advice.

For clinical questions, doctors usually need to speak directly with patients. This allows them to understand symptoms properly, review medical history, and ensure any advice is accurately documented in the medical record. That’s why, when patients have a medical concern or question, the most appropriate step is often booking a consultation with a GP rather than sending a message through reception.

Our reception team will always do their best to guide you toward the right appointment type, so your doctor has the time needed to address your concerns properly.

📅 If you have a health question or concern, speaking directly with your GP is the best place to start.

Neurodiversity Celebration Week highlights the importance of understanding and supporting diverse neurological differences in our community. 🧠

Paediatricians play a crucial role in early identification and assessment through comprehensive psychometric testing. These evaluations help families understand their child's unique strengths and areas where additional support may be beneficial.

General practitioners are increasingly equipped to conduct initial screening assessments, particularly for conditions such as attention difficulties. Early recognition allows for timely referrals to appropriate specialists when needed.

At Earlwood Medical Centre, our team works collaboratively to ensure patients receive comprehensive care tailored to their individual needs. We believe in celebrating neurodiversity whilst providing the clinical support that helps each person thrive.

Understanding neurological differences requires expertise, patience, and a commitment to individualised care. Our approach focuses on thorough assessment and evidence-based support strategies.

If you have concerns about attention, learning, or developmental differences, speak with your GP about appropriate next steps for assessment and support.

What questions do you have about neurodiversity and healthcare support?

March is Nutrition Month — a good reminder that everyday eating habits can have a long-term impact on your health.

Balanced nutrition plays an important role in maintaining a healthy weight and reducing the risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes and metabolic disease.

If you’re concerned about weight management, blood sugar levels, or overall nutrition, your GP can help guide the next steps. This may include support from our dietitian for personalised nutrition strategies, or referral to our endocrinologist and weight management specialist for more complex metabolic concerns.

Taking a proactive approach to nutrition today can support better health outcomes in the future. Speak with your GP to learn more or ask about referrals to our specialist services.
