Moving house is always a huge task. It can feel so stressful, but there is also a lot of joy in starting fresh! As an expat, I have moved across borders many times. I have set up homes in England, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Wales, and Australia!Clearing out old things feels great. Then, you get to arrange your favourite nostalgic items to make a brand-new country feel like home.Watching this video from Dr. Laurie Santos reminded me of why this matters so much.Right now, I am moving once again. To get through the packing, I am blasting my go-to moving tracks:"Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" by Green Day"Never Going Home" by The Bell Tower. It turns a stressful move into a happy moment!

Changing how we understand stress can change how we respond to it.

Stress. It makes your heart pound, your breathing quicken and your forehead sweat. But while stress has been made into a public health enemy, new research suggests that stress may only be bad for you if you believe that to be the case. Why do we all feel so motivated on January 1st? And why does it wear off by February?

Hengchen Dai, Katherine Milkman, and Jason Riis found that aspirational behaviors (gym visits, goal-setting, health-related searches) spike at what they call temporal landmarks: the start of a new week, a new month, a birthday, a semester. They named this bias the “fresh start effect.”

Why do we show a fresh start effect? Crossing a meaningful time boundary creates distance from your past self. The version of you who skipped the gym last week starts to feel like a different person. And that makes it easier to act on your better intentions without the weight of recent failure dragging you down.

The Fresh Start Effect has a big practical upside. If you're trying to start a new habit, timing it to a fresh start (a Monday, a birthday, the first of the month) gives you a psychological edge.
