This reflection from a young client at Granville PS captures something educators see every day: wellbeing and learning are deeply connected.

When emotional regulation improves, engagement increases. When stress decreases, learning becomes more accessible.

Supporting children therapeutically within school settings strengthens both academic participation and long-term development.

Transition points are vulnerable periods for many children. Changes in environment, expectations and peer groups can heighten anxiety and dysregulation.

Supporting emotional regulation before Year 7 begins protects long-term engagement and learning continuity.

As part of our school partnership program, KidsXpress includes structured high school transition support to help students enter secondary settings with greater confidence and stability.

When a child is in fight, flight or freeze, the thinking brain is offline. Expecting reasoning during dysregulation rarely works.

Trauma-informed practice prioritises regulation first, relationship second, learning third.

When nervous systems settle, learning becomes possible.

School-based therapeutic support strengthens classrooms by strengthening emotional safety.

Over the past two days many people will have seen media coverage of a violent incident involving Sydney school students, including footage of the attack circulating online.

Our thoughts are with the young person at the centre of this incident and their family. When deeply distressing moments like this are shared widely, it can extend the harm for the child involved and impact many other young people who may see the footage.

When events like this circulate widely, it also raises an important question for all of us working with and around children: what happens to a child’s dignity when their worst moment becomes widely shared content?

There can also be unintended consequences. When incidents go viral, the young people responsible may gain notoriety or attention among their peers - something that can reinforce harmful behaviour rather than discourage it.

Completely shielding young people from what spreads online is almost impossible. But how adults respond (and how these moments are shared and discussed) can make a real difference.

A trauma-informed response asks us to pause and consider the impact not only on the child involved, but also on the many other young people who may be watching.

Moments like this can be difficult for parents, carers and educators to navigate. When incidents involving young people reach the media, schools and teachers can also come under intense public scrutiny. Yet behind the scenes, educators and school staff are often working hard to support the wellbeing of their students and respond carefully to complex situations.

Children shouldn’t have to carry these moments alone. It’s up to us as adults, at home and at school, to hold calm, supportive spaces where they can process what they’re feeling safely.

We’ve attached a practical guide for parents and carers on how to support children when distressing videos circulate online. Educators may also find it helpful to share with families in their school communities. The guide can also be viewed and downloaded here: https://www.canva.com/design/DAHDyCPoulo/jS8AOaEWvi1KOA3-TCGuXA/view?utm_content=DAHDyCPoulo&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link2&utm_source=uniquelinks&utlId=h8ba434f6f1

Slow, deep breathing helps regulate the nervous system by signalling safety to the brain.

When we breathe deeply into the belly and lengthen the exhale, the stress response begins to settle and the thinking brain comes back online.

Regulation skills change outcomes. When children learn to calm their bodies, they regain access to learning and connection.

International Women’s Day often focuses on leadership, visibility and voice.

In schools, some girls are overlooked precisely because they are quiet.

🔹 They don’t disrupt.
🔹 They internalise.
🔹 They over-function.
🔹 They carry worry, perfectionism and self-blame without drawing attention to themselves.

When distress is silent, it is easy to miss.

Balancing the scales in children’s mental health means noticing the girls who don’t cause problems — and ensuring they have access to safe, trauma-informed support before stress becomes crisis.

Every child deserves to be seen, heard and supported.

After presenting to the Rotary Club of North Ryde our Acting CEO, Rana Ensor, was honoured with a tree planted in her name at the GroTrees Grove in Lithgow - what a unique and deeply meaningful gift!

Beyond its environmental impact, the gesture also felt deeply aligned with our work… when we invest in children’s healing, we’re planting seeds for stronger futures.

Thank you to all the members of the North Ryde, Macquarie Park and Lane Cove Rotary Clubs for the invitation to share the impact of our work. We’re always grateful for opportunities to engage with community groups across NSW. ❤️🌱

This feedback came from a 9-year-old child supported through our Expressive Therapy program. When asked what had been helpful about KidsXpress, they said: “Having someone to talk to.”

Sometimes it’s that simple.

When a child has a trusted adult who listens without judgement, their body begins to settle. They don’t have to carry everything on their own.

Beyond parents and carers, teachers are often the safe adults children turn to every day. A consistent, attuned presence in a classroom can make more difference than we realise.

Being heard is often where healing begins.

Every child deserves support before struggles become crises.

Because of this partnership, more children can access expressive therapy in the place they spend most of their day - school.

Our Story

KidsXpress is a specialist trauma focused organisation dedicated to improving life chances for our country’s most vulnerable children and youth through the delivery of Expressive Therapy Programs and Trauma-Informed Education Services. A registered charity, KidsXpress was established in 2006 to address the lack of services available to support children who were living with the effects of childhood trauma such as domestic violence, neglect, sexual abuse, illness or grief. Through the delivery of nationally accredited and evidence-based therapy and education services, KidsXpress is leading the way in early-intervention services by protecting children and youth from the insidious and cumulative effects of toxic stress – and a childhood that no young person should have to endure.

Our vision is to create a future our children deserve. Our mission is to transform the lives of children impacted by emotional trauma through leading expressive therapy and education programs. Our purpose is to enhance the emotional well-being of children, their families and their communities by managing and minimising the impact of emotional trauma as we work in partnership with schools, welfare agencies and mental health professionals to inspire children to thrive.
