Body strong, mind sharp, soul nourished & spirit higher than ever 🏃🏻‍♀️🚴🏻‍♀️🚣🏻‍♂️ 🏅

The NZ Coast to Coast is said to have become almost a rite of passage for multisport athletes from around the world... while I question whether sustained exhaustion is a rite of passage, the race definitely lifted me to higher place 🙌🏻

Starting at Kumara Beach on the West Coast, the race traverses the width of the South Island of NZ, crossing the main divide & finishing at New Brighton Beach on the East Coast

No amount of training as (what I now know is referred to as) a ‘Weekend Warrior’ could have prepared me for what this course demanded

There were multiple times I questioned what I was doing such as delaminating my knee on a boulder during a river crossing, chasing paddles & survival bags down rapids after capsizing the kayak, & seeing no end to the final straight segment of the road cycle… but never once did I question whether we were going to cross the finish line 🏁

What an amazing life experience I am so grateful to have had… alongside 2 most special humans 💕

While I am yet to sign up for my next adventure… this post recovery mindset is yearning more

Lipomas are common benign slow-growing soft tissue tumours that can occur anywhere, but most commonly in the head, neck, shoulders & back regions

They can also be found in or between muscle, bone, associated with viscera or at a site of previous trauma

Their slow, usually painless growth can lead to a large size at presentation

Cosmetic deformity or compressive symptoms usually bring lipomas of the upper limb to medical attention earlier than other regions of the body

These 2 patients presented to with slow growing lumps in their upper limbs

Following appropriate preoperative imaging, surgical removal was performed requiring significant dissection & mobilisation from important neurovascular structures

Surgery performed by Dr Sarah Tolerton (MED 0001196862) – Specialist Plastic Surgeon. We recommend you consider a second opinion before proceeding.

Posted • Coming out of surgery for extensive injuries caused by picking up an unexploded bomb, Senri was in disbelief to see his fingers straight for the first time in over two years.

The most important question for the soccer-obsessed 14-year-old was whether he could one day play goalkeeper again 🥅 ⚽

Senri suffered serious burns injuries from a bomb left behind since World War Two while playing near his home in the Solomon Islands at the age of 11.

With limited medical care available near his home in the Solomon Islands, Senri was supported by Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for children to come to Sydney for major surgery performed by Dr Sarah Tolerton, to release the constrictions on his hands, close the wound and improve his mobility. The outcomes have been life-changing.

Our hands account for less than 5% of total body surface area but over 50% loss of function if unable to be used

Reconstructive techniques aim to restore form & function to the hand, returning patients to work & life as soon as possible following trauma / surgery

Skin grafts & flaps are surgical techniques commonly used by plastic surgeons when a defect cannot be closed by primary or secondary intention

This young man underwent reconstruction of a soft tissue defect of his left index finger with a full thickness skin graft to reduce healing time & contracture

He underwent revision of the scar & contracture at his joint with Z-plasty flaps 7 months later - which involves transposition of 2 opposing triangular flaps that change the direction of scar to be better aligned with natural skin folds or tension lines and less restrictive to movement
