NUAA NSW

NUAA NSW NUAA is a not-for-profit NSW-based organisation advocating for people who use drugs.

The NSW Users and AIDS Association (NUAA) is a not-for-profit NSW-based organisation advocating for people who use drugs, particularly those who inject drugs. The peak drug user organisation in NSW, NUAA was formed in 1989 in the face of a growing HIV epidemic. A group of drug users, their friends, families and supporters established NUAA as an independent, user-driven community-based organisation

. Funded primarily by the NSW Health Department, NUAA provides education, practical support, information and advocacy to users of illicit drugs, their friends, and allies. NUAA has often led the way in developing innovative approaches to peer education and community development, and has contributed to Australia having one of the lowest HIV rates amongst injecting drug users in the world.

NSW’s commitment to ending HIV transmission continues with the launch of the NSW HIV Strategy 2026–2030.

The Strategy builds on strong progress in HIV prevention, testing and treatment across the state, while strengthening the focus on equity and access for communities that have not benefited equally.

Developed in partnership with community organisations, clinicians, researchers and people most affected by HIV, the Strategy sets out a coordinated, evidence‑based approach to further reduce transmission and support people living with HIV to live long, healthy lives.

This week is National Volunteer week. Volunteers are a big part of NUAA's programs. From our peer distributors to the DanceWize NSW volunteers, we could not operate without any of them.

To everyone who has volunteered with NUAA we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Perhaps it was handing out equipment at the Crown St NSP or in your own community, perhaps it was giving your time to be part of a panel or advisory group, perhaps it was supporting your peers at a music festival. Whatever it was, it made a difference.

Thank you 🩷

Meet the Team: Lived and Living Experience (LLE) Development Specialist Becky (she/her)

Imogen Rebecca (Becky to her friends) joined NUAA’s Community Engagement team last year and brought with her a passion for driving change on an institutional level as well as an individual one.

“I am deeply passionate about the historical, political and social influences that shape the experiences of people that use drugs and the intersectional marginalised communities most impacted,” she says.

At NUAA Becky’s role focuses is on building the LLE workforce and helping peers develop the tools to advocate for themselves.

“It is the information I wish had existed when I entered the LLE workforce ten years ago, right at the beginning of its formal recognition in the mental health sector,” she says.

Becky’s long career in the alcohol and other drugs sector has given her a unique understanding of how important harm reduction is and why we need to continue to advocate for the rights of people who use or have used drugs.

“I enjoy speaking to privilege, power and systemic change, and while I am not sure it will all happen in my lifetime, I am motivated to be on the right side of history.”

This passion spills over to her personal life too as she raises a three-year-old and supports her teenage stepchildren.

“The drive to break intergenerational cycles and create genuine change for future generations is never far from why I do this work.” 💪

We are heartbroken to share that our friend and colleague Nikkas pass away last Friday, May 8, following a sudden medical event.

Nikkas was a much loved by everyone at NUAA and in the wider community. She was the embodiment of vibrance. Not just due to her wonderfully bright hair colours, but from the sheer passion she brought to everything she did. Nikkas was loyal, kind, fierce and entirely herself. She laughed freely and often. She was impossible to ignore and her absence in our lives will be felt for a long time yet.

Nikkas joined NUAA in January 2020 as the NSP Lead just as we were all learning about COVID-19. Having just relocated from South Australia, Nikkas was thrust into a new position in a new state and yet handled it with diligence and care. Nikkas and her core team of Tony, Louise and Alain kept the Crown St NSP open every day throughout the COVID lockdowns, working faithfully and tirelessly to serve the community.

In 2025 the NUAA NSP transitioned to an entirely postal model, Nikkas led this change with her trademark compassion ensuring no one in the community felt left behind by the closure of the face-to-face service. As demand on the postal service skyrocketed, she continued to make service users felt heard and cared for.

Nikkas is entirely irreplaceable. Right now, the grief of her loss feels impossible to overcome, but if there is anything we can learn from Nikkas herself it's the importance of community. We can lean on each other, share the collective burden of our grief and know that our memories of her will live on forever.

Our hearts go out to her partner and companion of 27 years, Kylie, and to Nikkas’ family as they cope with the loss of their beloved daughter, sister and friend.

If you'd like to be informed of memorial arrangements for Nikkas please email nuaa@nuaa.org.au or call the NUAA offices on (02) 9171 6650.
