“We need time to move through the pain of loss. We need to step into it, really to get to know it, in order to learn.”

“Grief is not just a series of events, stages, or timelines. Our society places enormous pressure on us to get over loss, to get through grief. But how long do you grieve for a husband of fifty years, a teenager killed in a car accident, a four-year-old child: a year? Five years? Forever? The loss happens in time, in fact in a moment, but its aftermath lasts a lifetime.”

– Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

This post is both professional and personal - and so, dear followers, I thank you in advance for your sensitivity and kindness.

It is beyond privilege that I was invited to lead an extraordinary service today to bid farewell to the beautiful Carla Stacey OAM - a life force and friend of nearly three decades to my family and I.

A woman like no other, whom radiated warmth and integrity to anyone lucky enough to connect with her. A shining feminist whose presence always made all others feel seen, heard and valued.

Her unexpected passing is, in short, unfathomable. She will be forever remembered for her great legacy of love, courage and passion - which she wove everywhere she went. A selfless person whom used her own voice to amplify others.

Carla believed in the power of community and today was no exception… over 800 attendees were present.

As wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunty, godmother and an “Olympic gold medalist friend” to so many, Carla’s farewell was characteristically monumentous… she had a wonderful habit of bringing people together. To symbolise this loving connectedness we passed baskets filled with skeins of pure wool through all the hands of all those present - these loved imbued fibres will later be passed at her Adelaide memorial and then woven into beanies for her beautiful husband and sons by a family member.

Her service was held in the iconic Marrickville Town Hall, a place that reflected all she stood for - community, connection and purpose.

We are all utterly bereft… soldiers in an army of love. We have been moulded by Carla and this love will never end… Captain Carla Stacey we will forever celebrate you by dressing up in speeches about love ❤️💔💔

David loved dairy farming, family and the bush.

He passed very unexpectedly - it was a privilege to be asked to walk beside the family through all that a passing like this entails ❤️💔❤️

It was my absolute honour to support family and friends to say goodbye in a way that authentically reflected every aspect of him - in a heartfelt private service at the historic Camden Park - the birthplace of Australian Farming. Picalunafunerals

Dear family and friends, next Thursday 8th August 2024 people around Australia will gather to talk about death, dying and bereavement.
It's part of an initiative called Dying to Know Day, and is designed to get people talking with each other about a topic many of us avoid.
So you are warmly welcome to attend in an intimate and safe environment exploring this often 'taboo' topic.
Northern Beaches Death Cafe will be held next Thursday 8th August. 10:30am to 12:30pm.
Pittwater RSL Club, 82 Mona Vale Rd, Mona Vale.
This is a free event and we look forward to seeing you there.
Please note this is not a grief counselling setting for those who have experienced a very recent or traumatic loss or death.

Get tickets on Humanitix - Northern Beaches Death Cafe hosted by Kathryn Breusch & Kathryn Booth. Pittwater RSL, 82 Mona Vale Rd, Mona Vale NSW 2103, Australia. Thursday 8th August 2024. Find event information.

I often quote from Francis Weller's book in funeral ceremonies. His words are soaked up by everyone in the room. The Wild Edge of Sorrow is a profound read and highly recommended if you are living with grief (for a person, pet or even a planet perspective).

“Where there is sorrow,” wrote Oscar Wilde, “there is holy ground.” These gatherings are an invitation to enter the sacred ground of grief and encounter the ways it enables us to walk in this...
