The Association is working hard to gather information that will provide clarity to the working status of therapeutic massage, remedial massage and myotherapy under Stage 4 restrictions in metropolitan Melbourne commencing at 11.59pm on Wednesday 5 August 2020. We will email members as soon as we have received confirmation.

The Association would like to thank members for their patience and understanding during these difficult and unusual times.

For Massage only spas & other massages that aren't fully qualified should remain closed during this times - but some Remedial Massage associations & therapists choose to do so. .
Yes, Massage Therapists ARE allowed to work.
The massage therapists @ In Lak’ech took a 2 year full time course on Campus to get their qualifications.
They also have to keep up with studies and show every year to their association this continuing education; have a Combined Malpractice, Public & Products Liability Insurance and have to attend a 1st aid and CPR course, every year. So a to perform remedial massage fully qualified and allowed by the health systems is not as simple as it seems - and not so cheap for the therapists either - and that is why massage therapists are health allied.
The government release on their website on 4th April a list of the business that can still open:
Healthcare
Chemist
Doctors and medical centres
Hospitals
Pathology
Physiotherapy
Remedial or therapeutic massage services

Latest Updates

As of today, Tuesday 31st March, we have been advised that massage is considered a non-essential services in Queensland, the Northern Territory and Victoria, and therefore remedial massage therapists in those states should cease face to face practice immediately. Victoria has advised that it considers myotherapy a non-essential service and therefore myotherapists in Victoria should also cease face to face practice immediately.

An Important Message from Massage & Myotherapy Australia

As promised, the Board of Massage & Myotherapy Australia has committed to keeping the membership informed of changes as directed by the Government.

As the environment in which we live and practice is changing rapidly, all non-essential contact services of more than 30 minutes is to cease as of midnight today the 25th March 2020. Every member will hold a contrasting view of what is essential and what is a health service, be guided by your State and Territory Health Departments. It may depend where you work, from home, a mall, a gym or wellness centre, there is no singular rule at this time.

Now is the time to ask yourself if you can realistically assess; treat and reassess; record and reschedule as an ethical practice within 30 minutes. Regardless of your view, or ours, on essential or health related service as stated in the Prime Minister's address, the cancellations in themselves will make business difficult to continue.

The Association understands that the Government's directive has not been particularly clear. However, in some cases, if your business provides an essential health service, consider your practice in your decision. The health service provided to your clients cannot be underestimated now or in the future.

UPDATES from Massage & Myotherapy Australia
Essential Services

Announcements were made yesterday that Government are looking at state-wide closures of all non-essential services, many of our members have been inquiring as to whether they can continue practicing.

At this moment we are expecting a list of ‘essential services’ from the Government. Until they release the lists, our advice to our members remains the same, that is you may remain open as long as you are obsessive about hygiene and infection control and have updated your informed consent to include questions such as, ‘Have you been overseas in the past 14 days?’ and, ‘Have you been displaying any fever-like symptoms?’

Business Closures

At this stage Massage & Myotherapy Australia are not recommending that every one of our members close their operations. It the position of the Association that recommending a blanket-wide shut down of all our members could place financially-vulnerable members at risk.

For any of our members who choose or are in a position to be able to shut down their practices and elect to do so we fully support and understand your decision. We hope you can all agree that until the Government puts policies in place to protect financially-vulnerable workers during this pandemic, recommending all members should shut down regardless of their personal circumstances of each member would be irresponsible to our members.

The Government have released an online training module that is designed specifically for healthcare workers, that covers the fundamentals of infection prevention and control regarding COVID-19. You can find that by clicking here.

More information will be incoming as it develops.
