Today is World Car Free Day, and we thought it was the perfect time to share some recent news around optimal daily step count! 👣 Two large studies published in JAMA have found that hitting 10,000 steps is ideal and was associated with the greatest reduction in risk of dementia, heart disease, cancer, and death.
However, participants who moved for only 30 minutes a day but at a fast walking pace demonstrated similar health benefits to the group that reached 10,000 steps per day – suggesting that the intensity of our physical activity may be more important than sheer volume.
If you are wondering about the minimum amount of steps to show health benefits, 3,800 steps were associated with a 25% decrease in dementia risk. And with each 2,000-step increment above, there was an 8-11% drop in cardiovascular and cancer disease risk.
Some days it can be a real challenge to achieve 10,000 steps! While regular physical activity is vital, it’s encouraging to know that picking up the pace when we are time-poor can significantly impact our health.

New studies show the 10,000 steps a day figure is a good target, but walking fast can have the same benefit in fewer steps.
