CONCUSSIONS
Following on from last weeks post our first topic is something that is increasingly a talking point in the sporting field, concussions.
Now a concussion is when damage is caused to the brain when it comes in contact with the skull. This can happen one of two ways, as either a direct blow to the head (a high tackle, fall down the stairs), or indirectly (whiplash).
Symptoms can continue to persist for up to 2 weeks following injury even longer in adolescents. Common symptoms include: blurred vision, dizziness, nausea/vomiting, loss of consciousness and headaches just to name a few. A full list of symptoms can be found here: https://www.world.rugby/the-game/player-welfare/medical/concussion/concussion-guidelines. If you have any of these symptoms you shouldn't continue playing and cease activity until they resolve.
Next week we’ll look into the process of recognising, removing and returning to play following a concussion.
