Extremely poor air quality is currently being experienced in the North East forecast district.

Smoke can affect people's health. Take steps to reduce your exposure and protect the health of yourself and others.

What you can do:
✔️Listen to your local emergency radio station.
✔️Stay indoors away from smoke. If you must go outside when it is very smoky, consider wearing a mask (P2 or N95 but seek advice from your doctor if you have a pre-existing heart or lung condition).
✔️Keep the air inside your home as clean as possible. You can do this by:
Closing windows and doors and opening them when air quality improves, using your split system air conditioner or switching other types of air conditioners to recirculate if they have this function, not using evaporative coolers because they bring outdoor air inside.
✔️Check in with elderly or vulnerable family/friends during this period.
✔️Use an indoor air cleaner, if you have one.
✔️If you think the air in your home is still uncomfortable, consider relocating if it is safe to do so. For example, go to an air-conditioned building like a library or shopping centre.
✔️People who are sensitive (people with a heart or lung condition, including asthma; people over the age of 65; infants and young children; pregnant women; and people with diabetes) to smoke should actively monitor symptoms and follow their health management plan recommended by their doctor.
📲If you are worried about your symptoms, see your doctor or call Nurse on Call on 1300 606 024.
‼If you or anyone in your care has trouble breathing, chest pain or discomfort, call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance.

🚸Impacts in the area:
Road travel may be hazardous due to low visibility associated with smoke.
Signs may be in place to slow traffic. Obey all traffic signs and instructions from fire agency crews near the fires.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a heatwave warning for the coming week, which may have health impacts across our community.

Extreme heat can affect anyone. People over 65, babies and young children, pregnant women, those with acute or chronic health conditions, and people who are socially isolated are at higher risk.
☀️ Stay cool
Use air conditioning or a fan where possible. Wear light, loose clothing and keep your skin cool with a spray bottle, damp cloth, or cool showers. If your home is hard to keep cool, consider visiting a public pool or an air-conditioned space.
Seek a place to keep cool, such as your home, a library, community center.
☀️ Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water and keep sipping fluids before you feel thirsty, especially if you’re outdoors or physically active.
☀️ Stay connected
Check in with family, friends and neighbours. Let others know you’re OK and look out for anyone who may need extra support during hot weather.
☀️ Plan ahead
Stay up to date with weather forecasts and schedule activities for the coolest part of the day.
☀️ Hot cars kill
Never leave children, adults or pets in cars. Temperatures inside parked cars can rise dangerously within minutes.

📞 If you feel unwell, call NURSE-ON-CALL on 1300 606 024 or see your GP.
