I had a rare day off today so thought I'd do some baking.
We have an abundance of huge, juicy lemons from a couple of trees in our garden that were just begging to be used so I decided to try a lemon drizzle cake using a recipe.
I substituted the flour with gluten free flour and it still turned out really well. It didn't rise as much with the gluten free flour but it still had a good crumb and is so lemony and tasty. Not quite sure how I'm going to stay away from it 😆
If you'd like to make this ridiculously delish cake then you can find it in the link on under Lemon pound cake.

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there... what would we do without your love and care ❤️

Today I spoilt my mom with:

•Crumbed goats cheese with fresh berries, prosciutto, walnuts, mixed leaves and honey dressing
•Creamy prawn and dill pies with steamed buttery veg and mini baked potatoes
•Strawberries and cream pavlova

Safe to say my mom loved it 😁

Thanks to cousin for the beautiful wine from a winery in Constantia, Cape Town. It was worth the wait.
And to Jake and Riikka for coming all the way from Finland. We love you 😘

After having so much rain on the Gold Coast lately, the last few days have been magic! That absolute sweet spot that occurs in autumn where you have those perfect windless, warm days and cooler evenings. My favourite time of the year and then so soon it'll be sweater weather.

I had friends over for lunch on Sunday. We had:

•Feta stuffed olives and peppers
•The smokiest baba ganoush you could ever imagine with crackers
•Spinach and feta spanakopita
•Garden salad
•Rose-scented Greek yoghurt panna cotta with macerated berries and pistachios

Yum!

Another year almost done and dusted and I realised I've only posted about 5 times on Instagram this year 😂
I thought I'd pop up a few food pics I took during the year.

Lazy day snacking... blue cheese, caramelised figs in syrup, smoked mussels and olives in my thrifted olive container
Roasted red grapes in honey and thyme with creamy Burrata and bread
A creamy potato bake with lots of melty cheese
Slow roasted mustard lamb, asparagus and cherry tomatoes, lemony roast potatoes with olives
A mammoth strawberries and cream trifle
Slow cooked beef and mushroom pie with not enough chips 😆
Cauliflower purée, prawns and chermoula
Halloumi chicken Parmesan with za'atar, roast potatoes, green beans
My French inspired brunch
Moules frites
Birthday cake for my mom... almond and berry with toasted Italian meringue
Thai noodle salad with coconut prawns
Oysters with gin and cucumber vinaigrette
Prawn brioche buns with salad and truffle crisps
Chocolate basque cheesecake
Melon, prosciutto, mozzarella and smoked almond salad
Passionfruit meringue tarts for Christmas
This years rocky road which was sold out before I could advertise it! PBJ flavored 🤤

Pretending I'm still in France and made Breton-style mussels for dinner tonight. The mussels were in a creme fraiche, smoky bacon and cider sauce. I served them with frites (chips) with aioli and a side salad.
We popped open some champagne and as you can tell from the last pic my husband is always happy to sample the culinary delights I have on offer 😁

I had a wonderful birthday yesterday. Thank you to everyone who wished me for it ❤️
I'm now in London! So the morning of my birthday we started off at the most charming little cheese shop in Teddington where we bought a bit of everything 🐷😁
We then went to Hampton court palace and walked around the actual palace before we went and saw the grounds. Of particular interest to me were the kitchens... huge areas with massive pots for boiling meat (back in the day circa 1500's) and huge open fires to roast all manner of things. The wine room was apparently filled to the brim with barrels of wine. I need a wine room! 🤔😅
I loved the tapestries and the painted ceilings. This was where Henry the 8th resided with his many unfortunate wives.
We then stopped for a picnic in the grounds and toasted my birthday with some pink champagne and a lot of cheese.
We walked amongst the kitchen gardens which were absolutely huge... they used to feed the entire palace back in the day and the gardeners were very knowledgeable with their gardening techniques. Nowadays the produce is sold in the café shop.
We went to a lovely local pub for dinner where I ate steak with black garlic aioli and finished off strong with some basque cheesecake.
The last pic is of my lovely friends Kathy and Monique who went above and beyond to make this trip absolutely incredible. I am beyond lucky to have such amazing people in my life to call friends. Thank you!! 🙏🏼
Now home to see my little family 🧔🏻🐶🐶

We arrived in Paris and stayed with our friend, lovely Julie, who could not be more accommodating. We arrived just before noon and she had some champagne and aperitif waiting for us. She lives in an 100 year old renovated flat with views looking out over Paris. She made us a simple lunch and we had the most amazing desserts from a Parisian bakery called Cedric Grolet. A pistachio mousse dessert in the shape of a rose and a vanilla bean shaped dessert filled with vanilla cream mousse 👌🏼😋
We then walked around to see all the sights Paris has to offer... the Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, the Eiffel Tower and the rebuilding of Notre Dame.
For dinner we went to a bistro called Rosie's and had chicken cordon bleu. Our starter was taramasalata with French loaf... the serviettes were a cute touch! This serviette wants kisses is the direct transaction ☺️
The next morning Julie prepared some breakfast for us... soft scrambled eggs, wafer thin chorizo, home made guacamole, cherry tomatoes and my new favourite soft goats cheese called Rocamadour cheese 🤤
We headed out for another day to go and see the sights... Sacré Coeur, Montmatre and Moulin Rouge and finally the Arc de Triomphe.
What a wonderful whistle-stop tour of such a beautiful city!

I was lucky to be treated to a huge bowl of langoustine (served with 3 different homemade mayonnaises) on a sunny afternoon at Kathy's home, followed by some margaritas and a game of Mollky with Malia le chat 🐈‍⬛
My Finnish sister-in-law will be stoked we played a game from her motherland... unfortunately I was pretty crap at it but I blame the margaritas 😅
The next day we went to the quaintest, prettiest little town in Auray called St Goustan. I was told we were going to one of the best creperies in Bretagne to try some authentic buckwheat crepes.
I had a savoury and sweet crepe because je suis un cochon 🐷😅
The first one was smoked duck, peach and raspberry crepe with a fresh salad with raspberry vinaigrette 👌🏼
The one I had for dessert was not buckwheat but made with normal flour... a thin crepe filled with pistachio mousse, drizzled with chocolate ganache and served with cream and housemade walnut vanilla ice cream 🤤
We washed it all down with the traditional crepe accompaniment which is fresh apple cider poured into ceramic mugs. Lucky we had an uphill walk to the car so we could try and digest all the crepes! What a perfect day 🙌🏼

From Sardinia we went back to Bretagne for more culinary delights as well as spending a few more days exploring this ancient and most beautiful area.
Breton style moules et frites was an essential dish to have on my trip and this one did not disappoint! Followed by caramel mousse piped on top of a traditional buttery Breton biscuit base.
We then explored the old fort in Concarneau, which was built in the 1500s to protect the port and town. Inside it you'll find restaurants and shops and people still live in this tiny little "town". We had our lunch in a restaurant inside the fort and then wandered around the antique market in the town square where there was a tiny train transporting tourists and a lot of locals wearing their striped Breton T-shirt's and round spectacles which I've learnt is a very typical look for the French.
