Stopped exercising in early pregnancy because someone questioned whether it was safe?

The uncertainty early on can feel daunting and until you have clarity, you may find yourself taking a step back from things like exercise.

In many cases, if there hasn’t been any medical advice from your GP, obstetrician or midwife to avoid exercise, it is safe to continue. But this can change as pregnancy progresses depending on how things are going.

These are conversations worth having with your health provider, so you can feel more confident in what you’re doing.

Exercise during pregnancy can be beneficial and there are ways to approach it safely. Considering things like heat, hydration and choosing activities that feel appropriate for you.

These are conversations I often have in clinic to work out what is appropriate for each individual.

“I should have cancelled my appointment today…I feel like I’m wasting your time. I haven’t done my exercises as much as I should have.”

Have you ever felt this way?

Many clients hold themselves to a really high standard and feel like they’re letting themselves down when things haven’t exactly gone to plan.

But these appointments are often where we take a step back, talk things through, see if anything is getting in the way or needs tweaking. And work out what feels manageable from here.

At times, there has actually been enough done that exercises can be progressed.

This year marks 10 years in physio.

Over the past decade I’ve had the privilege of meeting and working with many women through different stages of their lives and health.

Along the way there have been countless conversations about symptoms, concerns and questions that many women are unsure where to ask.

I feel incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to share in some very open and vulnerable conversations with women about things that are deeply personal to them.

I look forward to continuing these conversations in the years ahead.

This weekend has been a reminder of the strength within our community.

From conversations at the Baby Expo to speaking today, I’ve been surrounded by women who show up for their families, their work, their training and often everyone else before themselves.

This year’s theme ‘Give to Gain’ feels especially relevant.

We understand this in fitness.
We give effort to gain strength.
We give consistency to gain results.

It applies to our health too.

When women give their bodies attention and give themselves permission to ask questions they gain confidence, clarity and long-term strength.

International Women’s Day isn’t just about celebrating women. It’s about continuing to support them in gyms, in clinics and in our wider community.

And I am grateful to be part of those conversations.

I’ll be at the Baby Expo on March 7th, continuing conversations around pregnancy, postpartum recovery and pelvic health.

Community events like this matter. They create space for women to ask questions, gather reliable information and feel supported early.

If you’re attending, feel free to stop by and say hello.

Over the years, one thing has become very clear to me…

Many women are quietly living with symptoms they have been told are “normal.”
Or that there’s nothing that can be done.

These are not always easy conversations to start.

But they matter.

Because when women feel informed, supported and truly listened to, something shifts.

They begin to see what is possible.
They begin to expect more.

And that shift is powerful not just for individuals, but for our whole community.

There’s a moment many women describe….

The first time leakage happens.

Often followed by the same thought….”Did that really just happen?”

It’s so often thought that this is something that happened to other women.
Older women.
Women after multiple births.
Not them.

Some even mention “I’m too young for this.”

But here is something I want you to know:

Leakage is common, but it’s not something you simply have to accept.

Your body is allowed to change and you are allowed to seek support when it does.

You don’t have to quietly adjust your life around symptoms.

If this has happened to you please know you are not alone and that support exists when you feel ready.

“I feel like I’ve lost all my dignity since having kids.”

This is something often said jokingly, but it matters.

I always remind clients that it’s still your body. You have the final say. Consent matters at every stage and it’s okay to ask questions, pause or say no to anything that doesn’t feel right.

Care should feel respectful, safe and centred around you.

“Do many people have the same symptoms as me?”

This is one of the most common questions asked at PhysioSpec.

Pelvic health concerns can show up at many stages of life, during pregnancy, after birth, with changes in exercise, hormones, work, or routine.

You don’t need to fit a specific category for your symptoms to be valid. Support is tailored to where your body is at right now.

It’s easy to feel like there’s no point starting if you can’t always commit

But small things add up especially during pregnancy, postpartum or when life feels busy.

Gentle movement, a short walk, a moment to breathe these still count.

Progress doesn’t have to look big to be meaningful.

Compression garments are often of topic during pregnancy, postpartum and when managing pelvic support, especially in summer.

Compression doesn’t just come in one style. Alongside full-length tights, there are shorter options that some women find more comfortable in warmer weather while still providing support.

As always, suitability depends on individual needs. PhysioSpec stocks a range of garments so women can choose what works best for their body and the season they’re in.

During summer many women notice a change in how their body feels, especially during pregnancy or the months and years after birth.

Heat can increase swelling, pelvic heaviness, discomfort and fatigue which can make movement feel more challenging.

Movement doesn’t need to stop in summer, it may just need to change.

Share this with someone who may be struggling with these symptoms or finding movement harder in the heat.
