What is a nuchal translucency scan?

A nuchal translucency scan is performed in the first trimester of pregnancy to screen for chromosomal anomalies. At Tamworth Medical Imaging we perform our nuchal translucency scans as part of a combined first-trimester screening, this allows us to calculate the preeclampsia risk in addition to screening for chromosomal anomalies.

During a nuchal translucency scan our highly qualified nuchal-accredited sonographers assesses the anatomy of the baby and measure the nuchal fold at the base of the head and neck. This scan must be performed between 12 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days so that the fold can be accurately visualised and measured.

Are you in need of a scan? Before you book your appointment with us, you will need to obtain a valid referral from a health practitioner. These referrals provide us with the information we need to perform your scan (and give you a Medicare rebate!)

Our handy guide below will take you through the process of getting a referral and booking your appointment

Step 1: See Your Doctor
Your doctor will assess your symptoms and, if necessary, write a referral for medical imaging.

Step 2: Choose Your Imaging Provider
You may receive a referral for a specific radiology practice; however, these referrals are able to be used anywhere. This allows you to book in with your preferred radiology practice (like us!)

Step 3: Book & Scan
Once booked, our expert technicians will perform your scan and your results will be sent to your doctor.
