Donโ€™t be fooled by the icy weather while at the snow! ๐Ÿฅถ

UV radiation, not heat, is the main cause of skin cancer and sunburn. That means that you can still be exposed while on the slopes.

With the atmosphere thinner (absorbing less UV) and snow reflecting up to 90% of UV, itโ€™s super important to protect your eyes with goggles, lips with lip balm, and any uncovered skin with sunscreen.

Hereโ€™s your good news story for the day!

Cancer Council research shows that the survival rate for all childhood cancers combined is improving. This ongoing progress is thanks to the development of new and better treatments and better supportive care.

Researcher Associate Professor Danny Youlden said the findings offer reassurance to families of children diagnosed with cancer that survival rates in Australia are amongst the best in the world.

They also offer a benchmark for progress and emphasise the importance of continued research into childhood cancers to provide better treatment outcomes and save more lives.

The Australian Childhood Cancer Registry provided information for this research and is part of Cancer Councilโ€™s work to support families affected by childhood cancers. You can find more info here: https://fal.cn/3qfEJ

True or False: Can you get sunburnt at the snow? ๐Ÿ˜ณ

The answer is true! Snow is extremely reflective, meaning on a sunny day you can be exposed to up to double the amount of UV on the slopes, which can lead to sunburn and harmful UV exposure.

If youโ€™re heading to the snow, be sure to slop on sunscreen to any uncovered skin, and wear UV protective snow goggles to protect the eyes.

๐Ÿ”จ โ˜€๏ธ Tuesday Toolbox Tip! โ˜€๏ธ ๐Ÿ”จ

Damage from UV exposure adds up over time. The more UV exposure, the greater the risk of skin cancer. It's important to always protect your skin if you work or spend lots of time outdoors.

If you work outdoors, always carry sunscreen in your tool belt and reapply it every two hours to skin thatโ€™s not covered by clothing.
