HealthWISE

HealthWISE HealthWISE supports community health at all stages, from child speech pathology to healthy ageing.

We provide primary and allied health services where there are shortages or gaps and provide mental health services across the regions. Our staff also assist in coordinating specialist services where there are none or a specific need. We are also continually developing and providing Aboriginal health programs and services. We strive to change the mindset concerning health by improving access to opportunities to become healthy for those in our service area. We recognise the social determinants of health and the unique characteristics of our region. We believe every person can make choices that result in a healthier self – our purpose is to make those choices easier.

Meet Emma de Waal, Occupational Therapist

Emma joined the HealthWISE team in Narrabri this year, bringing her experience working with children, including neurodiverse clients and their families.

She loves working in a regional setting, where she gets to work with people from all walks of life and collaborate with a wide range of health professionals – from speech pathologists and physiotherapists to psychologists and visiting paediatricians.

“I love the variety of my caseload and the challenges it brings. It helps me grow as a practitioner and make a real difference for kids and their families,” Emma says.

Welcome to the team, Emma!

During our recent TechWISE workshops, we introduced participants to Healthdirect, a free health service currently available in NSW. When you call Healthdirect, a registered nurse will ask questions about your health and guide you to the most appropriate care. This may mean connecting you with a nearby GP, pharmacist or urgent care service, arranging a phone or video consultation with a GP, or directing you to emergency care if your situation is life threatening.

From 1 January 2026, Healthdirect will expand nationally and become 1800 MEDICARE. Through this service, registered nurses will be available around the clock to provide health advice and connect callers to the right support, whether that is a GP, hospital or urgent care clinic. For people who cannot wait to see their regular GP, triage nurses will be able to connect them to a free telehealth GP consultation after hours on weeknights and across the weekend. This may include services such as emergency prescriptions for regular medication or treatment for illness and injury.

We really value hearing from our community, and we always appreciate when people take the time to leave a review or comment about their experience with health services.

However, due to national health regulations (AHPRA), we are not able to reply to, endorse or engage with comments that relate directly to clinical services or individual health experiences.

This is to ensure health information remains accurate, impartial and safe for everyone.

Please know that your feedback does not go unnoticed – we read and value it. If you would like to share feedback directly with us, you can do so via our website contact form, or through paper forms in our offices.

Today is R U OK? Day 💛

Before you check in on someone else, check in with yourself first – and that’s OK.
Ask yourself:
Am I ready to listen?
Am I prepared for them to say “No, I’m not”?
Have I picked the right moment and space to talk?

When you’re ready:
1️⃣ Ask R U OK? – be friendly and genuine.
2️⃣ Listen with an open mind – no rushing, no judgement.
3️⃣ Encourage action – support small steps or suggest professional help if needed.
4️⃣ Check in – follow up and let them know you care.

Some conversations are bigger than friends or family can handle. If someone has been struggling for more than two weeks, encourage them to reach out for professional support.

A simple conversation can make a big difference.

World Su***de Prevention Day – 10 September

This year’s theme, Changing the Narrative on Su***de, asks us to move from silence and stigma to openness, empathy and action.

At HealthWISE, we are committed to supporting people who have been affected by su***de. Through our Universal Aftercare Program, we provide free, confidential and trauma-informed support to those who have attempted su***de.

How we can help:
- Personalised support strategies
- Assistance after a su***de attempt or loss
- Free self-referrals, or referrals via your GP

Services are available across the New England North West

Su***de is the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15–44. Behind every statistic is a story – and support can make a difference.

If you, or someone you care about, needs support, you can reach out directly to HealthWISE at mentalhealth@healthwise.org.au or speak to your GP.

Thank you for joining us during Adult Learners' Week!

Our TechWISE pilot program gave community members the chance to build digital skills that make health more accessible — from using emergency support apps, to connecting with telehealth and to improving accessibility. These skills are not only valuable for attendees, but can be shared with family and friends to help even more people.

A big thank you to Adult Learners Week for their support and funding, which meant we could buy portable projection equipment to bring our workshop on the road to libraries without their own technology.

And of course, a heartfelt thank you to Central Northern Regional Libraries – Tamworth City Library, Tamworth South, Nundle Library & Seed Library, Barraba Library, Manilla, and Kootingal – for welcoming us into your spaces and promoting the program locally.

Libraries are much more than a place for books – they are lifelines, with staff who know the heart of their communities. If you’re ever passing through, pop in – you might discover more than you expect!
