Pre-pregnancy advice

Preparing your body for a healthy pregnancy isn't as simple as just knowing when you’re ovulating. Making sure your body is as healthy as possible to create and house a baby is an important part of pre-conception health. Having six months to a year of pre-pregnancy prep prior to conception gives your body the necessary time to detox from any unhealthy substances and build the right nutritional foundation. These are some easy ways to give you the best start to a healthy pregnancy.

Find a regular exercise routine. An easy way to improve your health if you’re not already active is to start adding at least 30 minutes of exercise on most days. While it is possible to start an exercise routine during pregnancy, having one already established will allow you to maintain the same level of exertion during pregnancy, as long as your doctor gives you the okay. Exercise before and during pregnancy can ease back pain and discomfort, boost your mood, help you sleep better and may also reduce the risk of gestational diabetes and pregnancy-related high blood pressure.

Clean up your diet. A diet rich in fresh, whole foods is preferable to highly processed foods. If you tend to eat out a lot or reach for pre-made packages of food, now is a great time to get comfortable in the kitchen. Master a few easy recipes that you can throw together in a hurry and keep some homemade ready-to-go meals in the freezer in case you’re in a pinch. Consider organic food whenever possible and opt for grass-fed or pastured animal products as often as you can. Buying organic produce all the time can be challenging so focus on avoiding items that fall into the ‘dirty dozen’, meaning they have been found to have the highest levels of pesticides. These include: apples, celery, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, grapes, hot peppers, imported nectarines, peaches, spinach, strawberries, red bell peppers, kale/collard greens, and summer squash.

Check your prescriptions. A study from the Mayo Clinic found that seven out of ten Americans take at least one prescription drug. While many are safe to take during pregnancy, many are not safe, or have not been studied and are best avoided. Since drastically stopping medications, or even herbal supplements, can sometimes pose negative health effects review any medications, herbs and supplements with your doctor before getting pregnant.

Check your supplements. High quality supplements can help ensure that women planning on becoming pregnant are not deficient in essential nutrients. Folic acid deficiency can increase the risk of both neural tube defects and spina bifida and plenty of omega-3s are needed to optimize brain development of a growing baby. Talk to your healthcare provider about starting a pre-natal vitamin with adequate levels of folic acid up to a year before planning on conceiving.

Go to the dentist. It may seem unrelated to pregnancy but getting your teeth and gums checked is an important part of preparing for pregnancy. Good oral health can help contribute to a healthy pregnancy, while untreated gum disease may be linked to a higher possibility of miscarriage, preterm birth and preeclampsia. Getting your teeth checked in advance also gives you enough time to get x-rays and start regular teeth cleanings if you need them.

Avoid toxins. Toxins are hiding everywhere, from ci******es to hairspray. Take a close look at the products you use regularly, including cleaning products, hair dye, makeup and toiletries and get rid of any containing harmful chemicals. Inhaling toxic chemicals and slathering them on your skin on a daily basis, even in very small amounts, may negatively impact your fertility. Instead look for products that are natural and free of chemicals.

Find your serenity. Being in a state of constant stress or depression may affect your s*x hormones, which could impact your fertility. Experiment with different ways to unwind, try relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, speaking with a counsellor, looking at mandalas, or even colouring. Being relaxed can help get your hormones on track and get you ready for conception.

World's First Baby Born After Uterine Transplant
October 03, 2014

I had the honour to attend a keynote address in Vancouver last week by the leader of the team,Mats Brännström, MD, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden who made this break through possible. Here is the story in case you missed it.

Dr Ken Apen

A 36-year-old woman who received a uterus transplant from a live donor in 2013 gave birth to a healthy baby boy in September 2014, according to an article published online October 6 in the Lancet.

Mats Brännström, MD, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and colleagues describe the woman's care in the journal.

Uterus transplantation is used to treat women who have either no uterus or a nonfunctional uterus. It has been attempted 11 times worldwide, but until now no live births have resulted from the procedure.

The patient was born with congenital absence of the uterus, known as Rokitansky syndrome. She underwent a uterus transplant from a postmenopausal woman aged 61 years, who had previously born two children.

The recipient and her partner underwent in-vitro fertilization prior to the transplant, and had 11 cryopreserved embryos. The patient's postoperative course was uneventful, and she experienced her first menstruation 43 days after the transplantation. She continued to menstruate regularly every 26 to 36 days (median 32 days).

The patient became pregnant 1 year after the transplantation, after her first single embryo transfer. She then began taking triple immunosuppression medications (tacrolimus, azathioprine, and corticosteroids), which she continued for the remainder of the pregnancy.

She experienced three episodes of mild rejection, one of which happened during pregnancy, and corticosteroid treatment reversed them all.

First baby born after womb transplant.
Blood flows of the uterine arteries and umbilical cord were within normal limits throughout the pregnancy, as were fetal growth parameters.

At 31 weeks and 5 days gestation, the patient was admitted to the hospital with preeclampsia. The baby's heart rate was abnormal and the baby boy was delivered by cesarean section 16 hours later. The baby's birthweight was normal for gestational age (1775 g) and his Apgar scores were 9, 9, and 10.

The mother was discharged from the hospital on day 3, and the baby was discharged in good health on day 10. They are both well.

"Our success is based on more than 10 years of intensive animal research and surgical training by our team and opens up the possibility of treating many young females worldwide that suffer from uterine infertility. What is more, we have demonstrated the feasibility of live-donor uterus transplantation, even from a postmenopausal donor," Dr. Brännström said in a news release.

The authors have disclosed no relevant financial relationships.

TOGS Baby WALL OF JOY AND HAPPINESS

At TOGS we value every customer highly. We also want to share the wonderful memories with you. We are happy to announce THE TOGS BABY WALL OF JOY AND HAPPINESS. We have put up a large pin up board that I like to refer to as our BABY WALL OF HAPPINESS (WOH) on which we put up pictures of babies, their siblings and parents that TEAM TOGS had the privilege to share their journeys through pregnancy and birth and beyond.. This is another avenue to keep the growing TOGS family together.
Ideally we will like everyone to send us some pictures. However this is not compulsory. The pictures do not have to be recent and no limitations of when the birth occurred, as long as we have a picture(S) with names and date of birth we are good to go. Ask to see the WOH at your next visit and try and spot the babies you know. They are the cutest little angels.....it is fun and yes they do change the older they get older.
