Autism first documented in 1925 by Grunya Sukhareva, a Ukrainian researcher, though her work was not recognized for decades. The term "infantile autism" and detailed diagnostic criteria were later coined in 1943 by Leo Kanner.
First used clinically by von Mering in 1893, paracetamol did not appear commercially until 1950 in the United States and 1956 in Australia. During the 1960s and 1970s, increasing concern was raised about the toxicity of nonprescription analgesics, but in normal use paracetamol exhibited a consistent safety profile.
In Irish folklore, "faery children" refers to changelings, believed to be fairy children left in place of human babies abducted by fairies. These replaced children displayed unusual physical traits and behavior, such as possessing uncanny intelligence, to signal their true, supernatural nature. The belief in changelings helped explain difficult or unhealthy children, providing a supernatural explanation for phenomena like infant mortality and conditions like autism when medical knowledge was limited.
Soooo before paracetamol…. Politics And Bleach -
Autism and our wonderful spectrum has always been present.
We have a Neurodivergent Clinic My Gp Hub and we make sure all the kids know that they are superheroes with very special skills and they just learn differently to neurotypicals.
It makes me sad when I see the current headlines, that make people feel that there’s something wrong with being on the spectrum or that they did something harmful to cause it.
Aren’t we all on the incredible spectrum of life in someway? I am proudly an Inattentive ADHD Doctor so take it from me - we all belong.
