Probiotics are the ‘good bacteria’ we consume that have a beneficial effect on gut health and gut issues like constipation and diarrhoea. There are many strains or types of probiotics and they each can be beneficial in different ways. You can improve your probiotic intake by eating more yoghurt, sauerkraut, miso, sourdough bread, some soft cheeses, kombucha or kefir. In some cases, you may need a probiotic supplement. It is best to talk to your dietitian or a knowledgable GP about what one is suitable for your health concern.

Prebiotics are to put simply, the food for the probiotics (microbiome) in your gut. If you don’t feed them, then they don’t survive, which makes it easier for ‘bad’ bugs to take over the environment and cause ill health. Fruit, vegetables and grains, couscous, legumes and oats contain natural prebiotics. There are also many products on the supermarket shelves that have had prebiotics added to them, for example some cereals and yoghurts.

Why do we care? Gut health is ever growing to show it has a large impact on overall good health. The bacteria living in our gut can have an impact on hormone regulation, immunity, digestion, mental health and hunger signals, just to name a few. So keeping the balance of ‘good’ bacteria in our gut is important. 🦠😁

Today, tomorrow, before Christmas, after Christmas or in the new year is never a time to start a new diet! 🙅🏼‍♀️🙅🏼🙅🏻‍♂️

You don’t need to restrict food groups, skip meals or count calories to find the healthiest version of you.

This is a reminder to enjoy the once a year celebration that is Christmas! 🎄🎅🏼🤶🏼🌟

Guilt and food rules won’t help you to eat less or eat healthier! It only increases your anxiety around your food, decreases your happiness and may isolate you from the experience of eating with loved ones…which in the end may just lead to an all or nothing mindset with you ‘giving up’ and out of control eating.

We challenge you to ‘make a healthy choice when you can.’ It may be an extra spoon of salad at Christmas lunch, an extra roast veg at dinner, an extra glass of water or a 5min family walk after lunch.

Remember, take changing habits slow. Make small changes that will last well into next year, rather than picking up a new life altering diet that doesn’t fit into your reality.

The very talented and kind Suzannah from Smart Dietetics has been one of the founding practitioners at our Barossa Wellness Hub! Suzannah has certainly been busy over the past 12 months enjoying spending time with her gorgeous bubba Otto but now is back and her appointments are very filling up fast! 🏃🏻‍♀️

We thought we’d share why focusing on good nutrition prior to conceiving is important:
- Improves egg quality
- Increases chance of conception
- Reduces risk of child developing certain conditions later in life
- Reduces risk of complications during pregnancy and birth
