Our Social Group is so much more than developing the standard social skills. It's about trying new things, pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, and exploring new learning concepts.

Today we gave tennis a go, whilst it wasn't everybody's preffered sport we all tried it and cheer each other on.

We then put our acting skills to the test. Using the scripts Jess had written we explored socially appropriate behaviours.

It's safe to say Jess won't be giving up her day job to pursue a career in writing 🤣

Today was a huge opportunity to show how mainstream services in our communities makes such a difference.

Trying on shoes, getting the right fit and deciding on which style can be so overwhelming when shoe shopping. Having Jack at The Athletes Foot in Elizabeth to help make sure we were measured correctly, had the right shoe type for our feet and support to try on and lace up made the whole experience manageable.

Today we even tried a new tool to help with a common issue of tying laces. We are trialling some elasticity laces to overcome this common challenge.

Our role is to find ways to support our clients to be independent, overcome obstacles and build confidence. Once we can identify areas people need support, we can help to find the right accommodation so the obstacles are removed and people can feel empowered, unstoppable and might even join the local footy team.

Planning to work on multiple goals in one session can feel overwhelming and may lead to disengagement.
However, implementing a low demand client led approach creates 'unplanned' skills building on multiple goals.
For example working on increasing fitness can also incorporate developing a deeper understanding of why transitions and routine change can be hard at times.

Today social group caught the train to Adelaide to visit M.O.D.
The current exhibition is all about beginnings. That encourages you to think about how and why we are here and how acting now shapes the future.
Highlights of the day was creating our own star and exploring the globe 🌎

The role of a therapy assistant allows for the option of longer sessions then the standard 1 hour therapy (thank you NDIS price guide). Which creates opportunities to transfer skills we learn in the clinic into our community. This experience allowed our client to get creative, navigate social interactions, and practice regulation strategies that have been the focus of recent sessions.

Community engagement, learning new skills, establishing connections and supporting clients to try new things is a huge part of our role.
This client has joined the local shed, learning how to use power tools, designing, measuring and creating. This support will take a staggered approach where they will build the skills, confidence and relationships so eventually they won't need paid supports to attend the shed with them.
Developmental Support has a huge focus on supporting clients to engage with their community and where appropriate doing ourselves out of a job.
Do you have something you've always wanted to try but haven't been sure about it. We can help develop a plan, support structure and team approach.
