Massage therapy is a wonderful treatment for a myriad of ailments. From sports injuries to age related pain, and everything in between, a deep tissue massage can be just what your body needs to speed up recovery and allow your muscles to get back to optimal shape and function as nature intended them to.

What is perhaps not as well known, is that magnesium is a wonderful addition to massage therapy and can increase the benefits of massage as well as aid in your body’s natural healing processes. While taking magnesium orally is of great benefit, using transdermal magnesium, whether in oil or lotion form, is the most beneficial for use during massage and can be used directly on the parts of your body that need it most during a therapy session. When used transdermally, magnesium ions are quickly absorbed through the pores and into the bloodstream. This is believed to be one of the quickest and most effective ways of supplementing magnesium levels in the body.

Transdermal magnesium adds to the benefits of massage therapy in several ways. Some of the most beneficial are the relaxation of muscles, overall muscle recovery, the elevation of mood, and the dissipation of generalized stress which often leads to tense musculature and pain. No matter if the massage session one receives is long or short, transdermal magnesium is sure to greatly enhance the experience.

Magnesium has been known to aid in the relaxation of muscles and is the mineral that truly aids in how our muscles function. Not enough magnesium, and our muscles will start to tighten up and spasm. Once our body receives adequate, and in some cases therapeutic, amounts of magnesium, the muscles will start to relax and you will once more feel in control of your body and well-being.

Knots and muscle spasms can be successfully treated with massage therapy and transdermal magnesium. Oftentimes, knots and muscle spasms can be directly related to magnesium deficiency. The combination of massage and magnesium soften otherwise hardened and painful areas and allow them to function optimally.

The use of transdermal magnesium during massage therapy is also optimal for muscle recovery especially during treatment of sports injuries. Adding magnesium to deep tissue massage allows muscles, joints, and ligaments to recover more rapidly, as well as gives the affected areas an anti-inflammatory boost to reduce swelling and delivers natural relief from pain. Transdermal magnesium can lead to faster recovery when used during a deep tissue massage which is optimal for athletes and anyone needing to get back into competitive shape as quickly as possible.

Using transdermal magnesium during massage therapy can aid in an overall feeling of well-being as it has been proven to be extremely helpful in lessening feelings of anxiety, depression, and general malaise. As a matter of fact, magnesium deficiency is believed to be a major contributing factor in neurotransmitter malfunction leading to stress, depression, anxiety, and some bipolar disorders. When magnesium is added to a massage therapy session, your body absorbs this most beneficial of minerals giving your muscles what they need to recover quickly, as well as allowing your body to better deal with internal and external stressors.

While massage therapy is wonderful in and of itself, when combined with the use of transdermal magnesium, the benefits greatly multiply. Knots and spasms will be able to be more quickly released, muscles will recover at an accelerate pace and your body will receive the mineral boost that it needs to maintain optimal levels of stress reduction, anti-inflammation, and general wellness.

What is massage?
Massage is a general term for pressing, rubbing and manipulating your skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Massage may range from light stroking to deep pressure. There are many different types of massage, including these common types:

Swedish massage- This is a gentle form of massage that uses long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping to help relax and energize you.
Deep massage- This massage technique uses slower, more-forceful strokes to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, commonly to help with muscle damage from injuries.
Sports massage- This is similar to Swedish massage, but it's geared toward people involved in sport activities to help prevent or treat injuries.
Trigger point massage- This massage focuses on areas of tight muscle fibers that can form in your muscles after injuries or overuse.
Massage is generally considered part of complementary and alternative medicine. It's increasingly being offered along with standard treatment for a wide range of medical conditions and situations.
Studies of the benefits of massage demonstrate that it is an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain and muscle tension.

Reflexology is based on the premise that there are zones and reflex areas in the feet and hands,
which correspond to all body parts. The physical act of applying specific pressures using thumb,
finger and hand techniques, result in stress reduction causing a physiological change in the body.
Points of soreness or discomfort associated with the applied pressure to any zone may indicate a
need for the concentration of pressure to the area over some period of time until soreness abates.

Massage has many wonderful benefits to all who partake , and in the winter months, this is no exception.

Immune Boosting
Massage therapy increases lymph flow which is packed with white blood cells or “killer cells”. These “killer cells” fight off infections and bacteria, boosting your immune system during this time of year where many of us get sick.

Dry Skin
Massage therapy is proven to improve skin hydration during these dry winter months. Oils and lotions used in massage contain healthy amounts of vitamin E and other vitamins. Massage therapy improves circulation, allowing your skin to absorb these essential vitamins, leaving you feeling nourished and hydrated.

Circulation
Massage therapy increases circulation to muscles, joints, and organs, warming up the body. Cold weather can bring on many discomforts, aches, pains and arthritis. Regular massage enhances blood flow, naturally lowering blood pressure and improving body function.

Winter Blues
Winter months decrease our opportunities to do our favorite activities, and increase Way of the heartdepression. It’s cold, and most of us don’t like it. Though, we cannot clinically say that massage therapy is a “cure” for depression, what we can say, is that getting regular massages enhances warmth and an overall state of well being. It makes you feel better! Massage therapy releases serotonin and endorphins, relieving stress and making you feel better.

Shooting pain, numbness, and/or tingling down one side of your lower back and into your leg or foot may be an indication you are suffering from irritation to the sciatic nerve. Sciatica is often caused by a problem in the lower back that compresses nerve roots and sends pain signals down the back of the leg.
The symptoms of sciatica may be constant, or you may find that sitting for long periods of time can cause excruciating searing pain, or that sleeping is nearly impossible.
