Another great opportunity to participate!

We are a team of researchers from the University of Newcastle who have developed a new online social-emotional communication program called Understanding Each Other. We are recruiting 8-12 year-old children, who may be Autistic or non-Autistic, along with one of their primary caregivers to take part in our second pilot research study of this program.

The program will run for 6-weeks and there will also be some online surveys to complete, as well as two scheduled half-hour assessments online with a speech pathologist. All participants who take part in this research will go into a prize draw with four winners being drawn at random to receive a $100 GiftPay voucher.

To go to our Expression of Interest page, please click on the following link: https://uninewcastle.questionpro.com.au/UEO2025-ExpressionOfInterest

You will be given more information about our study, along with the chance to read a Participant Information Statement. If you would like to register your interest in taking part in the study, you will also be able to provide your consent and fill out some key details about yourself and your child. If you have any questions about this research, please get in touch with our lead researcher, Dr Babette Rae at babette.rae@newcastle.edu.au

Thank you very much for your consideration of this research.

In the wake of the disastrous 2022 floods in NSW, Dr Kaylene Henderson - Child Psychiatrist, Allison Davies - Music and the Brain and Maggie got together the night before their Wollongong Calming Today's Anxious Kids conference to record a live session in which they shared advice, support and strategies for helping children cope in the aftermath of the disaster.

We know many folks in the mid-north coast/Hunter region of NSW are now in the same position – Parents and others in our community face a huge task of not only rebuilding their lives and neighbourhoods, but in supporting their children to feel safe.

So we are reopening access to this event, which we hope will offer some support to communities who are hurting. Please feel free to share with families, ECEs, schools, friends and families in the affected region.

💛 If you'd like to help people impacted by these disasters, you can donate to Givit.org, who are working in partnership with the NSW Government, local councils and recovery organisations to get essential goods and services to people in need.

Are you concerned about the mental health of your autistic child?

Partners in Parenting (PiP) Kids-Autism is a new personalised online parenting program that aims to support autistic children’s mental health, by empowering parents to reduce or prevent their autistic child's depression and anxiety.

This study is funded by Australian Rotary Health and has been approved by Monash University Human Ethics Research Committee ( #40824).

Parents will take part in a free personalised online parenting program with 1:1 parenting coach support sessions via teleconference, with a provisional psychologist.

❓How do parents get involved?
✅ You may be eligible if you live in Australia and:
✅ You are a parent/guardian living with an autistic child (aged 8 - 12 years) who is still in primary education and speaking in multi word sentences (i.e. I am jumping on the trampoline);
✅ You can read and speak English;
✅ You have internet access;
✅ Your child is not taking any medication for anxiety or depression;

📵✨ It’s Screen-Free Week! ✨📵

This week, Good for Kids is encouraging families, schools, and communities to take a break from screens and enjoy more play, fun, and time together.

3 key benefits of reducing screen time include:

✅Better sleep and focus – Less screen time helps kids sleep better and improves attention during the day.
✅More active, healthy play – Reducing screen use gives kids more time to move, play, and develop strong bodies.
✅Stronger relationships – More face-to-face time builds better communication and connection with family and friends.

During Screen-Free Week, we encourage students and families to:

⚽Play outdoor games or sports
🌿Explore nature and enjoy the outdoors
🤸‍♀️Learn a new dance
🧩Spend quality time with family, like having a board game night or going for a walk
🎨Try a new hobby, like drawing, cooking, or crafting
