✨I don’t even like the word co-sleeping as I just instinctively sleep, next to my baby, in our king bed, where we are the safest and happiest✨
Creating a safe space to sleep has 7 key factors
1; mum is breastfeeding through the night
2; non smoking parents
3; no alcohol, drugs or medications that effect awareness
4; baby is healthy and full term
5; baby is on its back
6; baby is not swaddled or overheated
7; mum and baby are on a safe surface, without big doonas, extra pillows or gaps to fall down
The benefits of sleeping with your babies are endless, longer breastfeeding journey, better milk supply, less SIDS cases, more independent children, more connected parents, creates more gentle fathers, and families who sleep together get the most sleep.
My toddler now sleeps all through the night most nights and it has me reflecting on those years where she would wake 15 times a night.
I laugh now at how shocked people were to hear that, but what I didn’t tell them was that we sleep together, so she’s never truly woken up, she makes a “meh” sound and I put my b**b in her mouth and we both go straight back to sleep.
I will always advocate for listening to your intuition, most parents know their child sleeps best with them, so let the mama bear out, she knows what’s best.
We will all sleep one day, but for now let’s celebrate what’s biologically normal infant behaviour and keep our children close.
And when they ask you how your baby sleeps, tell them “with their eyes closed” 💗
