Shin splints is a general term for pain along the shin bone, but in athletes, it’s often caused by medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) — an overuse injury of the tibia.

MTSS commonly occurs in sports and activities that involve repetitive impact, such as running, jumping, or allegro in dance. Symptoms usually include exercise-induced pain along the inside or front of the shin, which can feel achy or sharp and worsens with increased loading.

Our sports physio, Eric Huang explains that early identification is important. By adjusting training load, improving strength, and addressing biomechanics, you can prevent the injury from worsening and keep performing safely.

What causes tennis elbow? 🎾

Tennis elbow often develops from repetitive wrist extension, gripping, or sudden heavy loading, like lifting heavy objects or returning to sport too quickly. It’s common in racquet sports, tool-based work, and jobs with repetitive manual tasks.

Tennis elbow most commonly affects people aged 40–60, but it can occur at any age with certain types of load and demands.

Learn more about the causes, and download our FREE 2-page resource via the linked blog.

⚡️ Back suddenly lock up out of nowhere?

An acute back spasm is when the muscles around your spine tighten quickly to protect an area that’s been under a bit too much stress.

It might be bending, lifting, twisting, ramping up gym loads too fast, poor warm-up, fatigue, or long hours sitting. And yes, sometimes it happens doing something as simple as putting on your socks 🧦

The pain can feel sharp and catching or like a deep, gripping ache.

The important part? Most back spasms aren’t serious damage. They’re a protective response to recent overload, not your back “giving out.”

Jumper’s knee, or patellar tendinopathy, is a common overuse injury that affects the tendon connecting your kneecap to your shin.

It often develops in younger athletes (15–30 years), especially in sports involving jumping, squatting, running, and sudden deceleration. Pain usually occurs at the base of the kneecap and can flare during activities that load the tendon — like jumping, squatting, stairs, or prolonged sitting. Stiffness in the front of the knee is also common, especially first thing in the morning or at the start of exercise.

As our sports physio Dr Molly Connolly explains, this condition happens when the tendon is subjected to more load than it can recover from, for example after starting a new sport, returning after a break, or rapidly increasing training volume. Managing load, improving strength, and allowing adequate recovery are key to staying active and reducing pain.

Ever wondered what the TFCC actually is, and why it matters for wrist pain?

The Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex (TFCC) sits on the little-finger side of your wrist and plays a key role in stability, shock absorption, and force transfer during gripping and weight-bearing tasks. When it’s overloaded or injured, it can lead to persistent ulnar-side wrist pain, reduced grip strength, and feelings of instability.

As our sports physio Tyler Cultum explains; TFCC injuries can occur suddenly (like a fall onto an outstretched hand or forceful twisting), gradually from repetitive loading in sports such as tennis, golf, cricket, gymnastics, or weightlifting, or through age-related changes in the wrist.

If wrist pain has been lingering, especially with gripping, rotation, or weight-bearing, a thorough assessment can help identify whether the TFCC is involved and guide the right rehab plan.

Ever suddenly bend over or get out of bed and feel your lower back seize up? 😣

That painful “locked-up” feeling, where standing, walking, or twisting becomes almost impossible, can make you lean to one side or stop you from standing tall.

These acute back spasm episodes often spike when returning to the gym, starting a new training program, or simply increasing activity at the start of the year.

Our new blog by physio Rachel Crosbee covers everything you need to know:
• What is an acute back spasm?
• Why do they happen?
• A simple 3-step plan to recover
• A checklist to return to the gym safely

Hip labral tears commonly develop slowly over time and can be a frustrating source of hip and groin pain. Most people with labral tears experience a dull ache at the front of the hip, with sharp pain during activities like walking, running, stairs, sitting, or pivoting.

Other common signs include clicking, catching, giving way, or reduced ability to walk longer distances, especially on inclines or uneven surfaces.

If your hip pain is ongoing or worsening, it’s worth getting assessed. Our physio, Dr. Molly Connolly explains that early diagnosis and targeted treatment can help you return to activity with less pain and better function.

What causes SIJ pain? 🤔

Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) pain can develop for a number of reasons, but often it comes down to the SI joints not coping with the amount of load or stress placed on them.

Some common causes include:
⚡ Trauma
A fall onto the bottom or a car accident can create a sudden force through the pelvis and SIJ.
🤰 Pregnancy
Hormonal changes + a shifting centre of gravity can increase demand on the pelvis and SI joints.
🧬 Hypermobility
Conditions like EDS/HSD may mean ligaments are “stretchier”, reducing stability and load transfer.
🏃‍♀️ Repetitive stress / overload
Running, jumping, heavy landings (especially one-legged), or loaded rotation sports like golf/tennis.
Even a sudden increase in walking, exercise, or standing time can trigger symptoms.
🦴 Spinal surgery
Especially after lower lumbar fusion — neighbouring joints like the SIJ may take on more load.
⚖️ Biomechanical factors
Scoliosis, leg-length differences, walking pattern changes, or muscle imbalance can place uneven stress on the SI joints.
👵 Age-related changes
Joint and muscle changes over time can contribute to SIJ pain.
🔥 Systemic inflammatory disease
In some cases SIJ inflammation (sacroiliitis) can be linked with conditions like ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis or IBD-related arthritis — so unexplained SIJ pain should always be checked.

📖 In our latest blog by Dr Molly Connolly, read about SIJ pain — including symptoms, causes and treatment.
