It is World Lymphoedema Week. Congratulations to our Lymphoedema and Respiratory Physio; Megan Howard on all her good work in managing this condition both at our clinic and Peter Mac. We are very lucky to have her expertise locally.
For Peter Mac patient Jack, beating cancer was a huge milestone—but his journey didn’t end there.
Following treatment for throat and tongue cancer, he developed lymphoedema, a condition that can cause persistent swelling due to damage to the lymphatic system.
"At first, I didn’t know what to do about it. The swelling was uncomfortable, and I was worried about how it would affect my daily life," Jack recalls.
With the expert guidance of Senior Lymphoedema Physiotherapist Megan Howard, Jack learned how to manage his symptoms through early intervention, advanced scanning technology, and daily exercises.
His results speak for themselves—significant reductions in swelling and a better quality of life.
Lymphoedema is a common but often under-recognised side effect of cancer treatment, particularly for those who have undergone surgery or radiotherapy affecting lymph nodes. But with the right care, it can be managed effectively.
March is Lymphoedema Awareness Month, and March 6 is World Lymphoedema Day—a time to shine a light on the importance of early detection, expert treatment, and self-management strategies.
