I want to share something that has recently occurred.
We recently trained a team in a small regional community, as we do each year. Just days later, we were contacted and made aware of a very serious incident involving a child and a swimming pool.
Early CPR, calm decision-making, and people willing to act played a critical role in the successful resuscitation of a young child. With a prolonged wait for paramedic arrival due to location. Those first minutes really matter! This outcome was made possible by the staff, parents, and bystanders on scene — everyday people who stepped up when it counted most.
We’ve now been asked to return so we can also teach those who were present and desperately wanted to help, but didn’t feel confident in what to do. It was an incredible team effort by everyone involved, and a timely reminder for the rest of us.
Situations like this reinforce why CPR and first aid are not just compliance requirements. As a paramedic and educator, I see firsthand that these are real, life-saving skills — skills that empower ordinary people to stay calm, take action, and make a difference while professional help is on the way.
The truth is, we don’t rise to the occasion — we fall to our level of training.
