Did you know… long before Halloween filled our shops with plastic and sent kids roaming the street asking strangers for junk food… it was called Samhain, a Celtic festival marking the end of summer and the harvest season, the beginning of winter, and the Celtic New Year (on the other side of the equator obviously).
Many modern pagan practices, particularly those of Neopagans and Wiccans, are based on this ancient festival.
Origins: Samhain was a time when the ancient Celts believed the veil between the world of the living and the world of the dead was at its thinnest.
Traditions: It involved lighting bonfires and wearing costumes to ward off spirits.
Modern observance: In modern Paganism, Samhain is observed around November 1st to honor ancestors and remember the deceased.
