Another year older and another challenge done. Staying ahead of the years as they tick along was something I was a little concerned about when I hit the big 4,0!!!

I thought to myself, I can do some things now, but will I be able to do them in 10 years? ๐Ÿค” And so, the challenge began.

I selected a reasonably hard set of movements and created a circuit. The workout was to do the circuit 40 times (+1 round every subsequent birthday). I didn't know if it was possible to do? I hadn't really trained for it. I just gave it a go. I was reasonably strong, fit and mobile at the time and wanted to be AT LEAST, as strong, fit and mobile in a year's time. Then at least that strong, fit and mobile every year until I turn 50.

The challenge is-

1 x kip up
1 x pistol squat (each leg)
1 x renegade push up (2 x 24 kg kettlebells)
1 x suitcase burpee deadlift (2 x 24 kg kettlebells)
1 x double kettlebell sn**ch (2 x 24 kg kettlebells)
1 x pullover
1 x muscle up

1 round x year of age.

The results by year so far-

2017 @ 40 years old, 40 rounds in 51:30 ๐Ÿค”

2018 @ 41 years old, 41 rounds in 58:40 ๐Ÿ‘Ž

2019 @ 42 years old, 36 rounds in 60:00 (exceeded cut off time) ๐Ÿคฆ

2020 @ 43 years old, 43 rounds in 53:45 ๐Ÿ‘

2021 @ 44 years old, 44 rounds in 48:54 ๐Ÿค˜

2022 @ 45 years old, 45 rounds 44:28 ๐Ÿ˜Œ

2023 @ 46 years old, 46 rounds in 44:23 ๐Ÿ˜…

2024 @ 47 years old. 47 rounds in 43:30 ๐Ÿฅณ

The challenge in the last few years has scaled up a little to not only beat an inexperienced (yet reasonably strong, fit and mobile) 40 year old, but beat an older wiser version from the previous year. I hit the 40 round mark at 36:43 today, meaning the 51:30 (@ 40 rounds and 40 years of age) that I managed 7 years ago was pretty pathetic. But in reality. It was very, VERY good. Because remember. It was challenging THEN.

Here's my point. You are where you are now. You can be reasonably strong, fit and mobile and training regularly (able to do a push up (+), pull up (+) and a + body weight back squat). But you can be better next year. Then after that, better than that. Improvements will depend on MOBILITY!

Or you're sporadically training (if at all). Your key ingredient to improving strength and fitness, will be... MOBILITY!

If you've read the stats, there was a dip in performance for a few years. I thought, if only I was stronger and fitter, everything will improve. I trained that way and nothing actually improved. It got WORSE!!! My WORST PERFORMANCE WAS WHEN I WAS at my STRONGEST AND FITTEST. However, I moved like s**t. For reference, moved = mobility (especially in 2019).

Most strength and fitness professionals will tell you that the key to success is working on strength and fitness, to gain strength and fitness. Except for this one. ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

The strange thing is, I haven't trained harder... I have only trained smarter. I trained for mobility.

Yearly challenge time which is my opportunity to measure where I am with regards to my previous yearโ€™s self.

It began when I turned 40 and those years just keep falling off the calendar(46 now). I thought it would be a great way to check how things are going and it has revealed a lot more than finding out if Iโ€™m losing, maintaining or gaining fitness.

Improvements with regards to sleep, nutrition and of course overhauling the training routine now with GOATA movement has led to improvement in overall well being, mood and happiness. Leading to an improvement this year.

Find something that is hard to do now and work on the things that will enable you to outperform yourself in a years time. You can start at any age and level.

So, donโ€™t wait until things are better next year. Get on to it and do something now, then do it better in a year.

My challenge is-

RUNNING ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ ???

Because it's fun to do early on a Sunday morning? ๐Ÿฅฑ

Because it feels like a massage? Really? Are you kidding?!?

Without good technique it's LIKELY to be a way to make the knees and back sore, so with good reason we avoid it ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

Personally, that has changed a great deal since working on the alignment of my body as a system from the feet to the hips to the spine to the head ๐Ÿ”ง๐Ÿช›

Resulting in running, for fun! ๐Ÿคฉ

Regardless of your experiences before, you can make adiustments to your body to permit the movement quality that allows you to move without any discomfort. Movement without discomfort LITERALLY feels wonderful.

It's not something that's just going to land on your lap. Your own path to this level of freedom can be shortened with the right guidance on how to go about it.

Because feet are the FOUNDATION of your body and the majority of our movement.
Building this base will help fix your posture and enable you to move with greater control. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป

How to start to build it?

โœ…Go barefoot! Feel the ground with your feet.
โœ…Avoid narrow fitting toe box shoes, overly cushioned or high heels.
โœ…Pull your hips back! They will help you to keep your feet positioned correctly.
โœ…Narrow your stance and point 2nd toes forward.
โœ…Pressurise the ball of the foot and toes down.

GOATA movement ? ๐Ÿค” Let me explain what that is.

A short while ago, the founder of GOATA movement observed the actions of groups of people who never seem to be affected by injuries. The typical stiffness and soreness that he, you and I have developed ways of getting around (for example with painkillers and therapies) is not shared by them. So he put together a method of training that would replicate the movements of these groups of people.

They fall into four categories-

Infants up to the age of 5 years old.

Indigenous cultures.

People over 70 that still have the capacity to exercise.

High performance athletes with 10 + uninterrupted years without (non contact) injury.

These groups display a way of moving and the observations evolved into the simple system you can benefit from today. We as people are built to be bulletproof especially if we use the blueprint of our innate design.

The best fitting name for this method is also explained in the acronym GOATA which stands for, Greatest Of All Time Actions.

I am a personal trainer with close to 10 years experience and formerly a professional motorcycle rider. I started training regularly when I was 18 and I am 46 now so yeah. I have seen a few things in the gym and this method has enabled me to experience the pure joy of pain free movement for the first time since I was a child (prior to the countless injuries accumulated over a lifetime).

I began training GOATA movement around 1 year ago and since then became one of the only certified coaches in Australia. I have used this method myself and had results and corrected imbalances that numerous physio and chiropractic treatments could not. I am feeling movement freedom that I had all but accepted was lost to me.

If youโ€™ve experienced discomfort (during or after) sport, recreational activities or training, there may be some alignment issues that GOATA movement is designed to correct.

As a personal trainer with close to 9 years experience and a gym enthusiast for over 25 years. I have noticed something that is VERY COMMON. That is that a lot of people who also go are doing stuff, which could be better.

What I am politely trying to say there is, it could be a LOT better. To the point that these individuals find it difficult to maintain enthusiasm when they are not seeing results. They decide that this avenue of self development is not for them.

As Iโ€™ve said before, I have been a routine gym goer for more than quarter of a century. In that time, you guessed it, I made a lot of the mistakes that I see every one else making but was stubborn and determined enough to learn the correct movements and now. FEEL FANTASTIC ! In this video, I am working on a reasonably complicated movement called the kettlebell sn**ch.

One kettlebell weighs 8 kilos and one weighs 32 kilos. What I am analysing is the difference between the patterns in what is a relatively light set (for me) and very heavy set (for me). Ideally. Theyโ€™ll be the same.

This kind of analysis is not just for me or complicated movements. It is what is vitally important for your progress too. Beginner to advanced. Please note, this is the key to results and feeling fantastic. No matter what stage of the journey youโ€™re on.

I am a Level 3 kettlebell instructor with competition experience at world championship level and have been coached by some of the absolute best.

Have you ever had that sinking heart feeling when you see a Grandparent or even your parents reaching a point in life where they can do less of what they want or were able to do ? Where they were always able to be depended upon, but are now dependent ?

Are you aware that more than anything else, they are weakening. Not ageing ?

Are you aware that the exact same thing will very likely happen to you ?

Would you like to delay that as long as is POSSIBLE ?

YES !!!

BUT HOW ?!?!

Well the answer is surprisingly simple and easy to answer.

Youโ€ฆโ€ฆ.. Need to get STRONGER ! (Did you notice I didnโ€™t say, get FITTER ?)

Ok so, what in particular needs to be STRONGER ?

Good question and I KNOW YOU asked that.

You need to strengthen (every day functional) movement patterns.

In this video I perform a complex of movement patterns that ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE can benefit from strengthening.

They are, in order of appearance (not in order of importance).

Upper body pull
Clean
Upper body (overhead) push
Lunge
Squat
Hinge (of hips)

Whatโ€™s your favourite excuse ?

I have light hair, pale complexion and a skin condition named rosacea/rhinophyma. It doesnโ€™t do a lot for my looks and itโ€™s exacerbated by some of my favourite things. Alcohol and ni****ne along with spicy and processed foods. Another thing that โ€œcanโ€ worsen the condition is EXCESSIVE exposure to sunlight.

My favourite excuse is- My condition will become worse if I go in the sun. In truth, what I am saying is that I really am not that big of a fan of the sun. The reason ? Because inside is where the beers, smokes and spicy chips are kept and I was happy to make exceptions for them despite knowing they cause harm.

I also know full well that a little bit of sun actually HELPS ! As of the last year, I have made it a routine to get some sun and cut the harmful things. Do you know what ?!?! The condition is improving ! ๐Ÿ‘ƒ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป

I used to look in the mirror and wish it would go away. Like meatloafโ€ฆ I would do ANYTHING (for clear skin) but I wonโ€™t do THAT (cut the crap and go outside).

When you look in the mirror, who/what is looking back at you ? Do you sing along with meatloaf too ? I would do ANYTHING (for the body I want) but I wonโ€™t do THAT (work out) ?

Itโ€™s why I ask ? What excuse do you have ? What exception do you make ?

If YOUR excuse is- I canโ€™t work out in a gym because I donโ€™t know what to do. Iโ€™ll say, I can help you !

So.... Today is my birthday and on this day, I do a workout to test myself against the previous yearโ€™s version of myself.

Itโ€™s simple. It began at 40 when I wondered if I could do something that was (at that time) very challenging, much better when I turn 50 ?

The workout is-

A pretty noticeable decline even though I exercise over 200 days per year.

It seemed as if it was inevitable that there would be a steady decline as the years went by.

However I am pleased to report that thereโ€™s been an improvement.

Today, @ 43 yo. I did 43 rounds in 53:45. ๐Ÿ˜Ž (I hit the 40 round mark at 50:15.)

Now, anyone following this challenge will be aware that the goal was to come under the original time, each year with a round added. I havenโ€™t quite done it yet but.....

Look out 44 ! ๐Ÿค˜

Competition weekend coming to an end following a very satisfying result at the Perth open 2019. I ended up with 160 biathlon points with 24 kilo kettlebells. The points accumulated with-

85 (1 point) double 24kg Jerks (in 10 minutes without setting them) and 150 (1/2 point) single 24kg sn**ches (in 10 minutes with one hand switch). This was a PB for me overall and, in each lift respectively. ๐Ÿค˜

Furthermore, I booked a spot with the Australian team to complete at the World Championships in Melbourne in just under 7 weeks. So we can put this one down as a good weekend. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Only draw back is that training will be really unpleasant until then. ๐Ÿ˜ซ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
