A Day in My Life as a Paediatric Therapist with AuDHD & FND
This is what a “normal” workday can look like for me:
• Showing up in my wheelchair and still showing up fully for my clients
• Taking sensory breaks with playdough to regulate my nervous system
• Navigating sensory overload and midday meltdowns
• Going for a walk when my body allows — knowing FND episodes for me can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 12 hours
• Playing games (and yes… absolutely destroying the kids — for therapeutic purposes 😄)
• Ending the day in a pile of plushies, completely spent
I share this because disability, neurodivergence, and chronic illness don’t disappear when you become a professional.
They walk into work with you.
They sit in sessions with you.
They shape how you understand, support, and advocate.
And they also give you deep empathy, creativity, flexibility, and resilience.
You can be disabled and competent.
You can be neurodivergent and highly skilled.
You can struggle and still make a difference.
This is what lived experience in therapy looks like.
This is what inclusion looks like.
This is what authenticity looks like.
To every therapist, parent, carer, or young person navigating invisible challenges — you’re not alone.
