What is Community Access?

Community access refers to supports that assist a participant to safely and confidently access the community.
This can include attending appointments, shopping, social participation, accessing community programs, and developing confidence in public spaces.
For some participants, community access also supports routine, emotional regulation, and safe transitions.

Support Worker vs Support Coordinator.

A common point of confusion in the NDIS is the difference between a Support Worker and a Support Coordinator.

Support Workers provide hands-on support in daily living and community participation.
Support Coordinators help organise and coordinate services and supports across a participant’s plan.

These roles are different, but they work best when communication is clear and the participant’s goals remain central.

What is a Plan Manager?

A Plan Manager supports participants by managing the financial side of their NDIS plan.
This may include paying invoices, tracking budgets, providing statements, and helping participants understand how their funding is being used.

Many participants choose plan management because it reduces paperwork and provides flexibility in accessing providers.

What is a Support Coordinator?

A Support Coordinator helps participants understand their plan and connect with appropriate services.

Support coordination can include linking participants with providers, helping manage service agreements, resolving barriers, and supporting participants to implement their plan effectively.

Support Coordinators often work alongside families, providers, and allied health professionals to ensure supports are aligned and sustainable.

What Are the Different Plan Types?

NDIS plans can be managed in different ways. The plan type determines how providers are paid.

Self-managed plans allow the participant or nominee to manage invoices and payments directly.

Plan-managed plans involve a Plan Manager who pays invoices on the participant’s behalf and provides budget tracking and statements.

NDIA-managed plans are paid directly by the NDIA and generally require the use of registered providers.

What is an NDIS Plan?

An NDIS plan is a document that outlines a participant’s goals and the funded supports approved to help them work toward those goals.
It also explains the categories the funding sits under and how supports can be accessed throughout the plan period.

NDIS plans are individual and should reflect the participant’s current needs, goals, and circumstances.

New to the NDIS? Start Here

If you are new to the NDIS, the amount of information can feel overwhelming.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding to eligible people with disability to access supports that improve daily living, independence, and community participation.

Over the next few posts, we will share clear explanations of common NDIS terms, plan types, and roles so participants and families can better understand how supports work.

Short term accommodation is now called short term respite.

We spoke with participants, families and carers about this change. Most told us that short term respite better reflects the value of informal supports and the importance of sustaining these relationships.

We know some people have concerns about the word ‘respite’, but many carers and families use and understand it well. After considering all the feedback, we chose this name because it’s clear and widely recognised.

Short term respite gives you time away from your usual care arrangements, while your primary informal supports take a short break.

We’ve updated Our Guideline to make it easier for you to understand and use. It explains:

✅ who can use short term respite

✅ what it includes

✅ how it works

✅ where it can be used.
