Where has this year gone? It's been wild.
As a carer for my parents Mum lives with us, and I'm at Dad's house literally every second day for the past 10 years life hasn't been easy. Some days I cycle through every emotion under the sun within hours.
But through my work as a therapist, my own healing, and honouring the space I'm in, I've learned techniques to regulate my nervous system. And they've been life changing.
This time of year can feel hectic and chaotic for so many of us. Whether you're organizing gatherings, planning Christmas day festivities, desperately trying to find time to relax, or lucky enough to get away for a break the pressure is real.
And then there are those who don't have much family around, or who are going through something so deeply internal that reaching out feels impossible right now.
If that's you, I want you to know: I see you. I honour the space you're in.
🎄 5 Ways to Calm Your Nervous System This Christmas 🎄
Feeling the holiday overwhelm? Your body is asking for regulation, not more to-do lists. Here's how to support your nervous system during the busiest time of year:
1. ✨ The 4-7-8 Breath
Breathe in for 4, hold for 7, out for 8. This activates your parasympathetic nervous system (your body's natural "calm down" response). Do this 3 times before bed or when you feel stress rising.
2. 🌿 Ground Through Your Feet
Stand barefoot on grass, sand, or even your floor. Feel the earth beneath you. This simple act helps discharge excess cortisol and brings you back to the present moment.
3. 🎵 Humming or Singing
The vagus nerve (your body's master calming nerve) loves vibration. Hum your favorite Christmas carol, sing in the shower, or simply make low humming sounds. Instant regulation.
4. ❄️ Cold Water on Your Face
Splash cold water on your face or hold a cold compress to your forehead for 30 seconds. This triggers the "dive response" and immediately slows your heart rate and calms anxiety.
5. 🤗 The 20-Second Hug
Hug someone you trust for at least 20 seconds. This releases oxytocin (the bonding hormone) and signals to your nervous system that you're safe.
Bonus: Say NO without guilt.
Your nervous system can't regulate if you're constantly overriding its signals. Protecting your energy isn't selfish—it's essential.
💛 Your body doesn't need perfection this Christmas. It needs presence, rest, and permission to slow down.

My favourite is grounding, and even in the rain it can feel cleansing and grounding at the same time.
