Glad that adenomyosis was high on the agenda in SIR Boston 2022. Priority is now set to conduct trials comparing existing medical therapies with UAE (uterine artery embolisation).
Attempts to a conduct randomized trial comparing UAE with hysterectomy were facing recruitment difficulties, as women were not keen to be assigned to hysterectomy, which is much more invasive than UAE. We know UAE will not be 100% comparing with hysterectomy, but close enough for more than 90% of women who can avoid a hysterectomy after UAE. We also know that UAE is much more effective than medications and Mirena IUD, but by how much-these future studies will show.

April is the Adenomyosis Awareness Month!

Adenomyosis is Endometriosis within the uterine muscle wall
Adenomyosis typically causes period pain AND heavy menstrual bleeding.
Laparoscopy might clear endo but will not cure adenomyosis which is in the wall of the uterus.
Ablation might worsen period pain.
Mirena may not be effective if the uterus is larger than 150ml.
UAE is a highly effective non-surgical alternative to hysterectomy.
