Redbacks — your 2026 physio benefits are live. ⚽️🕷️

Most players only think about the physio after something goes wrong.

That's exactly when you don't want to be figuring out where to go, how much it costs, or how long the wait is.

So here's the deal — as our official club partner this season, you've already got priority access, a heavily discounted first consult, and a team that knows your sport.

It's all sitting there waiting for you.

Takes less than 2 minutes to activate 👇

Season's here and we couldn't be more excited to be part of it. ⚽

We're proud to be backing Maitland Junior FC again this year — watching these kids develop week to week, compete hard, and learn to look after their bodies is genuinely one of the best parts of what we do at Thornton Physiotherapy.

And speaking of looking after bodies — if there's one thing that makes a real difference for young footballers, it's what happens before the first whistle even blows.

A proper warm-up isn't just a quick lap and a stretch. Done right, it:

✅ Cuts serious injury risk by up to 50%
✅ Primes the muscles and joints for the demands of the game
✅ Keeps kids on the park longer — which is the whole point

10 minutes of the right prep can save weeks on the sideline. Worth it every time.

Here's to a big season ahead, Maitland Juniors. We've got your backs — literally. 🙌

That thing at the top of your shoulder that hurts after a fall? Yeah — that's probably your AC joint. And no, it's not a dislocated shoulder. 😅

AC joint injuries are one of the most common things we see after contact sport, a stack on the bike, or a rough fall at netball. Most don't need surgery — and with the right rehab, people get back stronger than they expect.

The two mistakes we see most: rest it completely and lose weeks of progress, or push through too early and drag recovery out twice as long.

There's a middle path. We wrote the full breakdown — link in bio. 👇

While the rest of us were at the clinic today, Amy was in Canberra doing this. 🏑

Our own Amy is down in Canberra as the physio for the NSW U21 Women's Hockey team at the Nationals — and the girls are flying.

Top of their pool. ✅
Knocked out Victoria in the semis. ✅
In a penalty shootout. ✅✅

Gold medal match tomorrow against Queensland. 🥇

Amy's the one keeping every single player on that field — the strapping, the treatment, the 6am assessments before a big game. The work nobody sees until someone needs it.

Go get 'em, Amy. The whole Thornton Physio team is cheering from up here. 💙💚

Today we pause. 🎖️

ANZAC Day isn't just a public holiday. It's a reminder of what sacrifice actually looks like — and of the people who gave everything so we could live the way we do.

To every veteran, serving member, and family who has carried that weight — we see you. We're grateful.

Lest we forget. 🌿

Quick note on hours: we're closed Monday 27 April for the NSW ANZAC Day public holiday. We'll be back Tuesday 28 April — ready to help you move, recover, and get back to doing what you love. 💛

🐣 Easter Week Clinic Schedule

We’re taking a short break over the Easter long weekend. The clinic will be closed during this time — please see our updated schedule above.

If you’ve been putting something off, this is your sign to sort it before the break.

We’ll be back soon, refreshed and ready to help you feel your best. ✨

Most warm-ups I see look like this:
• Jog a lap 🏃‍♂️
• Quick stretch 🤸‍♂️
• Start training 💪

Feels right…
But it’s missing the most important parts.

Structured warm-ups can reduce:
✔ ACL injuries by up to 60%
✔ Ankle injuries by up to 60%
✔ Hamstring strains by 50%

In this week’s blog, I break down the 3-part framework we use with local teams to actually prepare the body for sport ⚽

It’s not longer.
It’s just smarter.

Great morning with the crew on Saturday 🏊‍♂️

I had the chance to run a quick session on how swimmers can prepare properly on race day — especially how to use the time in the marshalling area to give yourself the best chance of performing well.

We focused on three simple things swimmers can do before they step up to the blocks:

1️⃣ Visualisation & mental preparation
Take a moment to run through your race in your head. Picture the start, your turns, and the finish. It helps calm nerves and sharpen focus.

2️⃣ Arm warm-up
Getting the shoulders and arms warm keeps them feeling loose and ready to fire from the first stroke.

3️⃣ Leg warm-up
A few quick activation drills help wake up the legs so they’re ready for the dive and strong kicking early in the race.

We also chatted about a few other important pieces of the puzzle:
✔️ Mobility preparation the day before racing
✔️ Cool-down routines after events
✔️ Simple nutrition basics for race day

Small habits like these can make a big difference when it comes time to perform.

Thanks to for having me out — great to see so many motivated young swimmers putting in the work 💪

🌟 Team Spotlight: David 🌟

Great learning opportunity this week. 📚

Dave presented a challenging knee case to the RIPN – Research in Practice Network, opening it up for discussion, reflection, and shared clinical reasoning.

These sessions take courage. Presenting difficult cases, questioning your thinking, and learning from others is where real growth happens as a clinician.

We’re incredibly proud of our team for stepping into opportunities like this to keep improving the care we provide our patients. 👏

Can physio actually help muscle injuries like avulsions… or do they just need time? 🤔

We’re seeing more teenage athletes with hip and pelvis “muscle strains” that are actually small bone avulsions.

It often goes something like this:
🔹 They hear a pop
🔹 They’re sore for a week
🔹 They try to go back to sport
🔹 And it flares up again

The good news?
They usually heal really well. 🙌

But only if they’re managed properly.

In this week’s blog I break down:
✔ What a muscle avulsion actually is
✔ Why kids don’t tear muscles the same way adults do
✔ When you should get an X-ray 🩻
✔ How we safely guide young athletes back to sport

If you’ve got a young athlete whose injury just isn’t settling, this is worth a read.
