Deb Roberson - Noosa Naturopath

Deb Roberson - Noosa Naturopath Naturopath & Medical Herbalist for 29 years. Specialising in Women's Health & Thyroid Symptoms. I believe that health is everything.

I’m passionate about Natural Medicine and helping people live their best lives. If we experience ongoing symptoms and lack of energy this effects every area of our life. After being a Naturopath and Medical Herbalist for 27 years, I have had the opportunity to help my clients achieve states of wellness that they did not even think were possible. I specialise in Women’s Hormonal Health which includ

es everything from PMS, endometriosis, PCOS and fertility issues to menopause and all the associated symptoms that can present at that time of a woman’s life. Another area I help a lot of clients with is thyroid issues which more times than not, result in weight gain that no matter what they do, they cannot budge the weight. There are a lot of symptoms that are ambiguous with thyroid issues and I see a lot of clients who have “fallen through the cracks” of mainstream medicine and are “putting up” with these symptoms unnecessarily. Adrenal fatigue and digestive issues are also more prevalent than most people realise and could possibly be the underlying cause of so many health concerns. I have helped many clients get their health and their life back on track as a result of determining these causative factors and then working to correct these issues which then go on to balance out so many health issues. In the last 7 years I have added Bio resonance Testing as part of every Naturopathic consult I offer. The Asyra Bio resonance testing helps to be “laser like” in pinpointing the most likely underlying cause of your symptoms. This helps to support your progress back to health with a streamline health plan and minimal supplements. I want you to know, there are a myriad of Natural Medicines – high potency, stringently researched and prepared into professional natural medicines that can give you real results.

Bio resonance Scanning

Is it Science or Magic? - Actually, it’s both

The Bio resonance scanning that I use has been developed by scientists. Therefore, as with most systems developed from a science background, it is independently tested throughout the research and development phase.

Magic – because within the scanning process, I’m looking at what is the potential cause of your health issue. We’re not just looking at symptoms and treating those. The Bio resonance maps out your health history and potential causes for what has contributed to your health concerns now; and tells me the starting point of how your body wants to heal.

There could be so many potential reasons you’re experiencing the symptoms you’re getting. The Bio resonance can really help to clarify. For every symptom you’re experiencing there could be a myriad of underlying reasons – it’s being able to cut out the “guess work” and get more clarity. Therefore, this saves money because you’re no longer using “trial and error” to work out your health issue.

Also, I can scan to determine which supplement your body will absorb and needs right now. When you buy a supplement from the internet or shop – how do you know if your body will even absorb that tablet? You don’t. This is why I have used bio resonance scanning for my clients for the last 10 of my 30 years as a Naturopath.

Bio resonance is a unique blend of accessing the ancient wisdom from modalities such Traditional Chinese Medicine, Homeopathy and Naturopathy with the science of new technology.

If you don’t live locally to me on the Sunshine Coast? No problems - I have lots of clients that live in other parts of Australia – I use a hair sample to do the Bio resonance scanning. Hair samples have been used for decades to access information about our health.

There's still lots of colds, flus and bugs circulating in our community. Stay on guard – and keep your immune system strong and resilient.

Rug up, stay warm and be sure to include plenty of "immune boosting" foods into your everyday eating.

A few tips to eating for a healthy immune system

Vitamin C is immune boosting and antiviral. Eat lots of citrus fruits – oranges, mandarins, lemon juice as a hot drink; strawberries, pineapple, kiwi fruit. Add capsicum, broccoli and parsley to every meal possible to keep your Vitamin C levels up.

Zinc is also a known nutrient to help boost your immune system. Foods high in zinc are oysters, beef, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, and wholegrains.

If you start to feel a sore throat coming on, try one of these homemade sore throat remedies.
• Gargle with warm salty water – an old remedy but a good one
• Add a drop or 2 of tea tree oil to warm water and gargle a few
times throughout the day
• Apple cider vinegar – 1 teaspoon in ½ cup warm water and drink
a few times a day. A lot of my client swear by this old remedy to
keep a cold away.

The cooler weather is here. Some people are starting to experience sore throats, runny nose, swollen glands and feeling a bit under the weather.

Here are some “Home Help Tips" to boost your immune system and clear the congestion.

Lemon juice and ginger drink – add the juice of ½ lemon, grated fresh ginger, top up with hot water and add a teaspoon of honey – great for sore throats and clearing congestion

Eat lots of garlic in your cooking. Some people like to add raw fresh finely diced garlic to the hot lemon and ginger drink. You are probably aware that garlic is a “natural antibiotic.”

Gargle with apple cider vinegar – 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar to ½ cup of warm water and gargle. Some of my clients say this is the best way to stop a sore throat in its tracks.

Alternatively, add a couple of drops of tea tree oil in ½ cup of warm water also makes for a fantastic throat gargle. Tea tree oil has natural antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. Be mindful to only have a couple of drops diluted in water.

Sitting in the morning sun, to boost your natural Vitamin D is also very therapeutic. Sip on your lemon and ginger tea for extra benefits.

Stop eating and drinking dairy foods eg milk, yoghurt, cheese until the congestion and phlegm has cleared. Dairy foods can increase congestion

If you need something a bit stronger to support your immune system to fight off a persistent cold or the flu, reach out to me – there are some amazing powerful immune booster remedies in the world of natural medicine. 🙂

7 Tips to Help Boost Your Energy

1. Get 7-8 hours’ sleep each night.
You can’t be bouncing with energy if you’re not getting enough sleep or broken sleep. Look at your sleep pattern and change a few things if need be.

2. Eating for energy.
Start your day with a good breakfast – I suggest protein of some description whether that be eggs – poached/omelette/scrambled served with some veggies eg tomatoes, mushroom etc on a bed of rocket OR a protein shake made from high quality protein add some fruit and chia seeds, blitz in a blender
Graze on protein for snacks eg a small handful of raw unsalted nuts or good quality hummus and veggie sticks to fuel your energy levels

3. Calm your busy mind
Having a busy mind is exhausting. If you find yourself thinking 20 steps ahead of yourself all the time, or pondering the past – STOP! Be present, take some deep belly breaths to calm your mind and your nervous system. A revved-up mind means a revved up nervous system – so your body is always in “fight or flight” which is exhausting – you have the power to take back control of your thoughts and your mind and your energy

4. Stay hydrated
Our body is 60% water. No wonder when we’re dehydrated our body, brain and muscles feel sluggish. It is recommended that each person drink 1.5 to 2 litres of water each day. Start to measure how much water you drink each day – I think you’ll be surprised how little most people drink over each day

5. Cut down the sugary drinks and food
Junk food and highly processed foods are ladened with sugar and preservatives which can give you a quick energy hit, but then your energy plummets even lower within 20-30 minutes – so not a sustainable way to fuel your energy at all

6. Move your body
Movement helps improve your energy. Even if you’re flat out exhausted – go for a gentle walk preferably in natural surroundings and see how this lifts your energy and your mood. Then slowly increase each day and over time – this will rebuild your energy.

7. Check out what the underlying cause could be
If you’ve recently been unwell – is your immune system needing some support. Have you been under stress for a long period of time – perhaps your “fight or flight” switch (adrenals) has been on for too long and now you’re running on empty. Chronic low energy is your body telling you that something is out of balance. Maybe you just need to top up with some good nutrients?

That’s where my Bio-resonance testing scans your overall health to see what could be out of balance and what could be the potential causes. Then I can help you with a plan of action so you can get your energy and your health back on track.

Check out my website for more information on the Bio resonance testing and how I can help. www.noosanaturopath.com.au or email me at deb@noosanaturopath.com.au 🙂

9 Ways to Conquer Sugar Cravings

There are many different theories on the causes of sugar cravings, including food allergies, adrenal fatigue, monthly hormonal changes in women, dehydration, processed foods, artificial sweeteners, etc.

Wouldn’t it be nice to get off the sugar roller coaster?

Here are 9 secrets for ending sugar cravings for good:

1. Avoid Processed Foods. Did you know that sugar and processed foods are as addictive as he**in and co***ne? Eating sugar artificially stimulates a region of your brain called the “nucleus accumbens” to produce dopamine, the pleasure neurotransmitter. Soon, dopamine levels drop, and we start to feel “flat”… or a bit “down.” We crave this pleasant, feel-good feeling again — so sugar leads to addiction. By choosing natural foods, rather than those that are processed, you’ll limit cravings for sugar and other processed foods.

2. Boost Your Serotonin. Serotonin, a.k.a. the “happy hormone,” can be raised through healthy foods, exercise, and a healthy sleep pattern. When you have plenty of serotonin, you are less likely to have cravings for sweets.

3. Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth Naturally. The all-natural sweetener Stevia has almost zero calories, does not raise blood sugar levels, and is 300 times sweeter than sugar.

A teaspoon of raw honey in your tea or coffee is also a better option than adding sugar. If you have sugar cravings and want to satisfy your sweet tooth safely, Stevia or raw honey are your best bets. Avoid all artificial sweeteners – they are nasty for your health.

When you're looking for something sweet to eat, have a piece of fruit.

4. Drink Plenty of Water. You may sometimes think that your body is asking for sugar, when in fact it’s dehydrated and really is just craving water. Try this delicious craving-buster: In a glass of cold water add fresh mint, sliced lemons or cucumber, and 5 drops of Stevia. Also try a warm cup of green tea sweetened with raw honey with your meals. This way, your sweet tooth is satisfied and your dessert cravings will be reduced.

5. Keep Your Blood Sugar Stable. Eat several small, healthy meals throughout the day always including a small serve of protein (ie eggs, meat, chicken, fish, tofu, nuts or seeds added to unsweetened yoghurt). This will help you to avoid dips in blood sugar levels.

6. Try a “green drink”. Loaded with nutrition, green drinks help boost your energy and reduce cravings for sugar and processed foods. Make your own from green veggies (optional: add one piece of fruit) eg celery, cucumber, kale, apple – add either turmeric, ginger, mint or cinnamon

7. Eat More Sea Vegetables. Rich in vitamins and minerals, sea vegetables, such as kelp and seaweed, make for a healthy snack. Sea vegetables have a high mineral content (needed for your adrenals to conquer cravings), while eating anything with sugar immediately depletes minerals from your body.

8. Enjoy Fermented Foods and Drinks. Fermented foods and drinks, such as kefir and yogurt, are a great way to reduce or even eliminate cravings for sugar. *Make sure to read labels on these products. Sometimes manufacturers sneak in added sugar – the yogurt section can look a little like the ice cream frozen food section, so be aware!

9. Various supplements can help keep sweet cravings at bay. Chromium, the herb gymnemma, and the household spice of cinnamon help support the pancreas and balance out blood sugar levels.

Also taking good digestive enzymes will help you to break down all the nutrients in your foods. Often cravings are because your body is looking for a specific nutrient. By supporting your overall digestive system you are better able to get all the nutrients from your diet.

VEGGIE SNACK WRAPS

Ingredients • Nori seaweed sheets • Selection of your favourite vegetables, sliced: carrot, celery, cucumber, capsicum, zucchini, sprouts etc. • Home-made hommus or guacamole • Add preferred protein source: boiled egg, sliced chicken, sardines, tofu

Method • Lay down a nori sheet with the rough side facing up (you will notice the seaweed papers have a shiny side and a rough side) on a chopping board. Spread a tablespoon of your chosen base over the seaweed sheet (e.g. avocado or hummus). • Add your selection of sliced vegetables on the side closest to you, then lay on a protein source if need be. Avoid adding too much in one roll. Wet the edges of seaweed paper at the far end and roll up tightly then press down once at the end. Let it sit for five minutes before cutting into portion size pieces.

Enjoy ! 🙂

Peppermint tea – either as a hot drink or cold infused

Peppermint tea has a long history for being used to help soothe digestion. Calming and cooling. Helps to relieve bloating after eating a rich or big meal.

In fact, this is how the “after-dinner-mint” came about, to be served at the end of a large meal to help you digest your meal.

Tea bag, dried tea leaf or fresh from your garden add boiling water and let steep for a few minutes for a hot drink.

Alternatively on these hot summer days, add peppermint leaves or tea bag to cold mineral water add ice cubes and a slice of lemon or lime. Very refreshing and cooling - Enjoy! 🙂

7 Hot Tips – How to look after Your Health over the Festive Season

1. Enjoy the abundance of fresh fruits that we have available at this time of the year – nectarines, peaches, mango, cold watermelon, and cherries – they make great snacks and desserts for adults and children, sweet and ripe to keep the sweet tooth happy. Grapes and cherries on the cheese platter for a fresh alternative. Fresh fruit salad for dessert instead of high sugar options

2. A fabulous home remedy for when you’re feeling bloated and uncomfortable after over-eating. Apple cider vinegar. Mix 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar (preferably Braggs- available at supermarkets) to ½ cup water and sip; or have before meals.

3. Drink water, water, and more filtered water: For a refreshing change have cold mineral or soda water and add juice of lemon or lime to it

4. When socializing – make your first drink a non-alcoholic drink – i.e. soda and lime. If you start with wine, beer, bubbles you will be more likely to eat more of the snack foods and not feel like the “real” food when it is served

5. When the heat really kicks in – add 1 teaspoon of mint flavoured Chlorophyll to a glass of cold water and ice cubes. It looks “exotic”, tastes nice and refreshing and very hydrating. The number of chefs I have given this tip to over the years as they cook up a storm in the hot kitchens can vouch for how hydrating this drink really is. Added bonus, chlorophyll has a great detoxing effect –which may be beneficial at this time of the year

6. Eating plenty of fresh crunchy salads when it is too hot to eat veggies – high in vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. High on taste, low in calories.

7. Keep up your exercise routine – even a gentle walk first thing in the morning is better than nothing. 🙂

The Body-Mind Connection

Having a busy mind & living in a state of stress:

• is exhausting
• causes disrupted sleep
• can contribute to anxiety
• could lead to emotional eating & weight gain
• puts your body in “fight, flight or freeze” mode
• increases the stress hormone cortisol, which then can -
• increase blood pressure
• can contribute to digestive issues such as IBS, stomach ulcers
• stress can be major contributor to most illnesses

If you’re interested to learn how you can “change your mindset, change your life”, I’m giving a short 20 minute workshop in my “Wise Women Healing Group” on Monday at 10.30am. If you can’t watch it live, you can watch the recording at a time that suits you. Here is the link if you’d like to join the group

Desserts can be tasty and healthy !

🍌Caramelised Bananas with Coconut and Macadamia Crumble🍌

Ingredients • 1 large banana, cut in half lengthwise and then cut horizontally • 1 tablespoon coconut oil • ¼ cup raw macadamia nuts • ¼ cup shredded coconut
Variations: You can use berries, peaches, cherries, or cooked apple/pear/apricot instead of bananas. Add some cinnamon if you like!

Method • Preheat your grill. • In a pan heat a little coconut oil and cook banana for about one minute on each side until golden. Place into an oven proof dish. You can use individual ones or a larger one. • Process the macadamia nuts briefly until mostly fine, leaving only a few chunky pieces if you like. • Remove from processor, add the coconut and coconut oil, then using your fingers combine well with the nut mix. Place the crumble mix over the fruit and grill for five minutes or so until the top is nicely golden!

Enjoy 😃
