Cyclones and weather disasters

People with chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart conditions need to be prepared for what to do when access to goods and services are limited and movement is restricted due to weather events.
Here are some handy tips.
• Store food, water and medications in a watertight container and kept in a cooler area if possible.
• Keep insulin and other injectables in a cooler bag with an ice pack to prevent overheating and losing its effectiveness.
• Have two medication storage containers, one with a family member, in the event one gets damaged or lost.
• Ensure a supply of food which includes non-perishable carbohydrates (muesli bars, cans of baked beans/spaghetti, crackers), especially for people on blood glucose lowering medications including insulin.
• Make sure your hypo kit is well stocked and items in date.
• Have a good supply of clean water to help prevent dehydration.
Having a first aid kit is also important in the case of injuries. The kit should include anti-bacterial lotions and sterile dressings due to the increased risk of infections during the wet season.

We are so very proud of Helen and all the work she does to help support those in our community

Central Australia has some of the highest rates of type 2 diabetes in the world, with some communities seeing up to 40% of adults affected.

Today on World Diabetes Day, we’re proud to acknowledge Helen Lamech from Central Australia, who was awarded Nurse/Midwife of the Year and the prestigious Administrator's Medal at our 2025 Health Professional of the Year Awards.

Helen, a Credentialed Diabetes Nurse Educator with Healthy Living NT, is helping to reduce the number of adults affected by diabetes through education and culturally informed support. Her work is transforming diabetes care across Central Australia and improving outcomes for the people she works with every day.

Thank you Helen for your dedication to primary healthcare in the NT! 💙
