Your risk of having a heart attack in the first week following infection is 11 times higher following RSV, 2-8 times higher after Covid and 6 times higher after the flu. This is because these viruses can cause significant inflammation to the heart.
Stay up to date with your free covid and flu vaccines and for those over 75 years, the RSV vaccine will be free from 15th May as a one off dose.
See the heart foundation website for further information as to how respiratory viruses can affect your heart.

High blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugars and having a high BMI are some of the biggest risk factors for having a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack.
Know your numbers by having a check up to see if you are at risk.
Dietary and lifestyle modifications can significantly improve these numbers and at times prescription medications can also help in preventing serious cardiac events.
