▪️What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is an invasive technique where thin monofilament needles pe*****te the skin to treat underlying muscular trigger points. A trigger point is a local contracture or taut band in a muscle fibre that is associated with a hypersensitive palpable nodule. They initially form as a normal protective, physiological measure in the presence of actual or potential muscle damage. This is thought to occur in response to unaccustomed concentric or eccentric loading, prolonged postures and repetitive low load stress. When trigger points occupy the muscle for sustained periods they can restrict range of movement, cause local tenderness or refer pain and disrupt function.

▪️How does it work?
Dry needling of trigger points often elicits a local ‘twitch’ response, an involuntary spinal cord reflex contraction. This is both diagnostic and therapeutic, as healthy muscle tissue will not ‘twitch’ when stimulated by a needle. After a ‘twitch’ response has occurred the muscle fibres in that area relax, circulation improves and inflammation is reduced.

▪️What will I feel during my dry needling session?
Most people do not feel the needle being inserted. Once the needle reaches the muscle, the local ‘twitch’ response is often described as an electric shock or cramping sensation. It is very brief and only lasts for approximately 15-30 seconds.

▪️Is dry needling safe?
There are minimal risks when dry needling is performed by a trained therapist. Before treatment, your therapist will obtain consent and discuss the benefits and risks of the procedure with you.

In the clinic, we practice a ‘clean’ technique, meaning that individually packaged, single use, sterile needles are used. The needles are very fine and most patients do not experience any side effects following a session. When side effects do occur, they are usually very minor and can include:

A temporary increase in muscle soreness 24-48hrs post treatment
Bruising or bleeding at the insertion site.

We love getting feedback on our staff!

"Hi Duff.
Your staff do a great job supporting our teams on game day but I particularly wanted to mention Erin’s effort on Saturday.
We played in atrocious conditions and, as well as all the strapping etc. that Erin did she also went on to the field a number of times to check on injured players.
Just wanted to give a shout out on behalf of Marlins.
Well done Erin!"

Shout out to Erin and all the amazing work she does with the SCU Marlins Rugby!

🔸What is Shockwave Therapy?
Extracorporeal Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive procedure that is predominately effective for treating chronic tendon and other musculoskeletal conditions. In response to treatment, individuals often report outcomes including pain relief and improved function.

🔸How does it work?
Your physiotherapist will operate a hand piece that uses pressurised air to generate shockwaves that are transmitted to the site of injury though a conducting gel. Between 2000-3000 shockwaves are delivered in each session, which takes approximately 5-10 minutes.

It is proposed that the shockwaves create micro-trauma, which in turn activates processes within the tissues to facilitate healing by:
Promoting the formation of new blood vessels
Stimulating collagen production
Decreasing chronic inflammation

🔸What can it Treat?
In our clinic, we have used shockwave therapy to successfully treat a variety of conditions that include, but are not limited to:
Plantar Fasciitis
Heel spurs
Tennis/Golfers Elbow
Achilles Tendinopathy
Calcific Tendinopathy of the Shoulder
How many sessions will I need?
On average, a total of 3-5 sessions performed at weekly intervals produces optimal results. Your physiotherapist will determine how often you need treatment depending on your tolerance and tissue response. Most patients will report marked improvement following the initial session.

🔸Is shockwave therapy painful?
Shockwave is best described as a strong, deep and rhythmic vibration. You may experience some mild discomfort when it is applied over a painful area, but this usually subsides quickly after treatment.

🔸Do I need a referral?
You do not need a referral to be eligible for shockwave therapy. However, your doctor or podiatrist may choose to refer you for shockwave when other forms of conservative management have not succeeded.

⚡What is Laser Therapy?
Low level laser therapy (LLLT) is a non-invasive light source used by some physiotherapists as an adjunct in the treatment of various musculoskeletal conditions. These conditions can include, but are not limited to:
Bursitis of the hip and shoulder
Torn muscles, tendons and ligaments
Lateral or medial epicondylitis (tennis/golfer’s elbow)
Disc herniation or degeneration
Neuropathic pain
Plantar fasciitis
Sciatica
Fractures

⚡How does it work?
Your physiotherapist will operate the handpiece, guiding the single wavelength of light by holding it directly over the damaged tissues. During this process, you and your therapist will wear a pair of safety glasses to protect your eyes. These types of lasers usually emit no heat, sound or vibration, so most people don’t feel anything when they are in use.

⚡Benefits
The use of laser therapy can provide several benefits to facilitate your recovery when included as part of a comprehensive treatment regime. The therapeutic effects of laser can include:
Analgesia
Decreased inflammation and swelling
Stimulated collagen production
Accelerated tissue repair
Improved circulation

Our Story

Since 1985, Chris Duffy and the team at Toormina Physiotherapy have been dedicated to bringing to the people of Toormina, Sawtell, Coffs Harbour, Bonville, Boambee and the rest of the Coffs Coast an up to date and enthusiastic physiotherapy service. We treat all sorts of problems with your musculo-skeletal system, such as sore backs and necks, knee pain and shoulder pain, ankle sprains, shin splints, sporting injuries, running injuries, work injuries. We rehabilitate after fractures and car accidents. We look find the cause of your problems and not just treat the symptoms. For example, your knee may be sore because you are rolling in on your foot, or your shoulder may be hurting because the muscles holding it in the socket are not working in the correct way. We make sure you understand what is causing your condition and we aim to help you to manage the problem correctly.
