The tight chest. The racing mind. The constant need to be “on.”
I normalized it. Until my body couldn’t anymore.”

How Does Trauma Lead to Anxiety? ( Part 2)

When we are too overwhelmed by on-going adverse experiences or after a single traumatic event, we freeze

We experience psychological paralyse or dissociate, i.e. the mind leaves the present moment

When the original threat has passed, we often get stuck in this freeze response

All of the activated energy from the threat response gets stuck in the body

We might seem normal, unaffected by the trauma, but the body remembers the experience and remains in a frozen state of threat response activation.

When we are triggered by something that reminds us of our trauma – a person, place, feeling, even a smell or sound – we believe that the threat is back, that the event is happening all over again.

Being stuck in a threat response wears down our physical and psychological health, makes you feel exhausted.

The experience of trauma can cause us to be always alert, in a state of hypervigilant anxiety.

Trauma survivors often live in fear of being triggered, which means that their threat detection system – the amygdala, a small structure in the brain – is always on. They experience hypervigilance, or constant alertness, because they could be triggered at any moment.

1. Self-medicating like drinking can help:
Having a few drinks might help to loosen you up for the time being, but it’s not going to help the core problem and will probably make it worse.

2. Talking about it can help
You may think that you can offload what has been weighing on your mind, but anxiety is a subconscious reaction that needs resetting the false alarm at the subconscious level.

3. Anxiety will go away on its own
Anxiety is a negative energy that would only built up over the years, if it is not properly treated, it will keep storing inside of your body and it can get worse without new coping strategy.

Depression can actually change one’s ability to think.

Research shows that depression can…
