Most people do not know just how much is involved in learning to read, and let me tell you, it’s A LOT! I find myself frequently clarifying the difference in decoding words and comprehending what is read, so I thought I’d make this visual! It’s important to note that speech and language skills are HEAVILY based in both of these! It’s also very common for a child to be an excellent decoder and have poor comprehension or vis versa. If your child is struggling with reading (most kids with communication delays and disorders will), I encourage you to talk with your child’s teacher and/or SLP to find out what you can do at home to support their literacy!
