The Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) is the organisation that makes sure hospitals (like ours!) meet the highest safety and quality standards.

We’re proud to say that Wesley Hyperbaric is not only fully accredited—but we’ve just been featured in their Member Spotlight!

Enjoy the read that Madelaine Goakes (our recently departed NUM) helped developed with ACHS.

“Hyperbaric medicine is not so well known, but it is certainly gaining recognition due to the results we are seeing.” In our latest Member Spotlight, we sat down with Madelaine Goakes, Clinical Leader at Wesley Hyperbaric in Queensland, to share the story of this impressive facility, their focus...

Alan, our semi retired hyperbaric technician (centre) has decided he’s ready to graduate into full time retirement.

For many patients that might not have interacted with Alan or our technicians, they work behind the scenes ensuring the chamber is operating safely for patients and staff. Think of like Mission Control 🤩.

Thank you for being part of the team Alan and best of luck in the future, we are going to miss you.

Can HBOT make you tired? 😴💨

Some people feel fatigued after hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), while others feel energised. If you do feel tired, it’s usually temporary—your body is working hard to repair and heal. Staying well-hydrated and getting enough rest can help.

Have you experienced fatigue after HBOT? Let us know in the comments! 👇

When you breathe 100% oxygen under pressure, several physiological changes take place:

✔ Oxygen reaches deeper into tissues, even in areas with poor circulation
✔ Inflammation is reduced, supporting the body’s natural healing processes
✔ New blood vessels start forming, improving oxygen supply to damaged areas
✔ The immune system is supported, helping the body fight certain infections

This increased oxygen availability helps the body repair and recover in ways that aren’t possible under normal conditions.

Before your HBOT session, there are a few things to keep in mind. As the chamber pressurises, you’ll hear a gentle hissing sound, feel a slight temperature increase, and may notice pressure in your ears, similar to flying.

For safety reasons, certain items cannot be taken into the chamber, including:

❌ Metal objects (except medical implants like pacemakers)
❌ Mobile phones, jewellery, and personal items
❌ Electronic or medical devices
❌ Alcohol-based grooming products (hairspray, makeup, perfume, aftershave)
❌ False nails, hair extensions, and false eyelashes
❌ Hearing aids
❌ Flammable items (ci******es, lighters, matches)

Can oxygen therapy help with ?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is being explored as a potential treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Early research suggests it may help reduce inflammation, support gut healing, and improve blood flow—but more studies are needed.

Struggling with healing?

When a or isn’t healing as expected, it can be worrying. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may help by improving oxygen delivery, reducing swelling, and supporting tissue repair.

During HBOT, changes in pressure can make your ears feel full or blocked, just like on a plane. But don’t worry—there are simple techniques to help! Try:

✅ The Valsalva manoeuvre – Pinch your nose, close your mouth, and gently blow.
✅ Swallowing, yawning, or sipping water to relieve pressure.

Our team will guide you through it, so you stay comfortable. Learn more about what to expect here: https://www.wesleyhyperbaric.com.au/hyperbaric-chamber-what-to-expect/

Life after cancer treatment doesn’t always go as expected.
Some men experience bladder issues months — even years — after radiation therapy. It might be radiation cystitis, a delayed side effect that’s treatable.

This is more common in men who’ve had radiation therapy for prostate, bladder, or bowel cancer.

Symptoms to look out for:
- Blood in your urine
- Burning when going to the loo
- Urgency or frequent night-time urination
- Ongoing UTIs

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may support tissue healing by increasing oxygen to damaged areas.

Wesley Hyperbaric is a licensed, ACHS-accredited day hospital. Medicare and private health insurance rebates are available for eligible patients.
Talk to your GP to see if HBOT may be right for you.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning occurs when CO binds to red blood cells, reducing the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. This can lead to serious tissue damage, particularly in the brain and heart.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) helps by:
✔ Rapidly removing CO from the blood, restoring normal oxygen delivery
✔ Reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, which can help limit long-term damage
✔ Supporting brain and heart function in cases of severe poisoning

HBOT is an approved treatment for moderate to severe CO poisoning and is used in hospital settings under medical supervision.

Radiation injury doesn’t always show up straight after treatment — it’s an unexpected part of the survivorship journey for many.
For Kayleen, it meant years of undiagnosed pain. For others, it may cause bladder issues like radiation cystitis — a treatable condition.

If you’ve had radiation and are now noticing symptoms like:
- Blood in your urine
- Burning when going to the loo
- Urgency or frequent urination
- Recurrent UTIs
It might be time to talk to your GP.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may support healing by increasing oxygen to damaged tissue. Wesley Hyperbaric is a licensed, ACHS-accredited day hospital. Medicare and private health insurance rebates are available for eligible patients.
