One of our main goals is to help patients understand fact from fiction when it comes to their teeth. Here are some of the most common myths we find ourselves dispelling!

🦷 You’ll always know when you have a cavity.
By the time you feel pain from a cavity, it’s already been there for a while. During a routine dental exam, we often find cavities before patients even know they have one.

🦷All fillings will need to be replaced.
With advanced filling techniques today, it’s possible that your fillings will last a lifetime. Of course, it all comes down to how well you take care of your teeth. Proper brushing and flossing are needed for longevity.

🦷Tooth sensitivity means you have decay.
While it certainly can, it’s not always the case. Other common causes of sensitive teeth include clenching or grinding at night, eating foods that are too acidic, or using strong whitening toothpastes.

What Causes Sensitive Teeth?

Ever winced in pain when trying to enjoy a spoonful of ice cream or hot drink? You're not alone, millions of people around the world experience sensitive teeth. Here are a few common culprits and simple ideas to help manage the issue.

Common Causes
Over time, sensitive teeth can come and go. It often happens when gums recede, exposing dentin on the roots of the teeth. Roots aren’t covered in enamel, which is what protects our teeth from feeling overly sensitive.

The enamel on the crown of our teeth can also erode over time, especially from these common causes:
🦷 Brushing too hard
🦷 Eating highly acidic food
🦷 Abrasive toothpaste
🦷 Grinding your teeth
🦷 Bulimia
🦷 Overusing whitening products

The good news? This type of tooth pain can be easily managed. First, you’ll want to book a visit with our practice so that we can evaluate your teeth and rule out other common causes of tooth pain, like cavities, decay or infection.

To help reduce tooth sensitivity, you can also make dietary changes, including limiting foods high in sugar like juices or sweet treats.

Are you a coffee lover? Here are some tips on how to keep your teeth white while still enjoying your morning cuppa ☕️

1. Use a straw -While plastic may not be ideal if you're enjoying hot coffee, consider a metal straw or try an iced coffee.

2. Add a whitening toothpaste to the mix to help remove surface stains before they become prominent. After drinking coffee, brush your teeth to avoid a coffee-coating and help reduce the risk of staining.

3. Sip your coffee swiftly. Instead of making your cup last for hours, drinking coffee quicker means it won’t sit on your teeth for long, leaving less room for stains.

4. If you can’t brush your teeth immediately after finishing your coffee, try to rinse your mouth with a mouth rinse or water to remove any leftover coffee from your pearly whites.
