Did you know that December 1st is world AIDS day?
Did you also know that:
Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) attacks the body's immune system and AIDS is the most advanced stage of the disease.
HIV may be spread by contact with an infected person's body fluids including blood, semen and vaginal secretions, but cannot be spread by kissing, hugs or sharing of food. HIV may be spread from a mother to her baby via breast milk.
People who have been diagnosed with HIV and are taking medications known as Antiretroviral Therapy and have an undetectable viral load do not transmit HIV to their sexual partners.
HIV remains a major global public health issue with 40.4 million lives lost to the disease so far; and
It is estimated that 39 million people are living with HIV at the present time; and
With access to effective HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care HIV infection has become a manageable chronic health condition which has enabled people living with HIV to live long and healthy lives.
