πΌDoulas in the Future πΌ
Future or aspiring doulas undertake training to learn the skills and knowledge needed to provide safe, evidence-based for support mothers and families. Training options can be as diverse as doulas themselves! They typically involve:
1. Formal training
π Some doulas enrol in formal training offered by organisations or independent training providers. These programs cover a wide range of topics, including birth education, labour support techniques, postpartum care, breastfeeding support, reflection and communication skills.
2. Certification
π Some doulas choose to pursue certification through organisations like DONA International or the Australian Doula College. Certification typically involves a formal training component in addition to attending and debriefing birth experiences and completing written assessments.
3. Self-study and apprenticeship
π€ Some doulas learn through self-study, listening to evidence-based podcasts or reading books, articles, and research papers on birth, doula care, and related topics. They may pursue apprenticeship opportunities, where they shadow experienced doulas and gain hands-on experience supporting mothers and families.
