Parkinson’s? Why should that be stopping you?

John has been living with the Symptoms of Parkinson’s for over 10 years. Through working with our Exercise Physiologist Harry (and a boatload of commitment) he has seen major gains in his strength, balance and function. Here is a video of John hitting a new PR on his deadlift… twice at 100kgs!

This is of course only part of John’s program with coordination, balance, flexibility and functional training being high priorities for his specific goals.

Exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of developing some of Australia’s biggest killers, including heart disease, dementia, diabetes, mental illness, and many types of cancer. And it’s not just about preventing illness. Regular exercise also helps to boost your energy levels, make you happier, and improve your general well-being.

Despite the health benefits, half of all Australians don’t get enough exercise.

If this sounds familiar and you need help getting moving, then perhaps seeing an exercise physiologist is a good start.

Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) are university-qualified allied health professionals. They specialise in designing and delivering safe and effective exercise interventions for people with chronic medical conditions, injuries or disabilities. Services provided by an AEP are also claimable under compensable schemes such as Medicare and covered by most private health insurers. When it comes to the prescription of exercise, they are the most qualified professionals in Australia.

It’s never too late to get moving! 🏋🏻‍♀️

There are lots of reasons exercise is invaluable in our senior years. Now, research has shown that it's also a powerful tool to help prevent our immune systems from declining as we age.

Researchers followed 125 long-distance cyclists (some in their 80s) and found they had the immune systems of 20-year-olds!

"The immune system declines by about 2-3% a year from our 20s, which is why older people are more susceptible to infections, conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and, potentially, cancer. Because the cyclists have the immune system of a 20-year-old rather than a 70- or 80-year-old, it means they have added protection against all these issues." - co-author of the research, Prof Janet Lord.

Remember, it's never too late to get moving!

Our Director and Practice Manager, Tess, spoke with the Warwick City Probus Club last month to let them know about Exercise Physiology and the benefits of exercise for healthy aging.

The presentation covered what Exercise Physiology is and where it fits on the spectrum of Allied Health, how exercise can reduce the risk of common causes of death and how exercise can positively impact heart health, a group of major chronic health conditions especially prevalent in the Darling Downs region.

We can't wait until the new year where many of the Probus Club members will join us in our Exercise Right for Active Aging (ERAA) group classes and learn how to age actively, safely and healthily!
