🦓 May is EDS & HSD Awareness Month! 🦓
Did you know that May is the international awareness month for Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD)?
What are EDS and HSD?
EDS is a group of 13 heritable connective tissue disorders caused by genetic changes that affect how the body’s "glue" (collagen) functions.
HSD are connective tissue disorders that cause joint hypermobility, instability, and chronic pain.
Why Physiotherapy Matters:
For many living with these conditions, joints have a greater range of motion than usual, which often leads to joint instability.
This instability can cause:
🔹Subluxations and dislocations
🔹Frequent sprains and injuries
🔹Acute and chronic pain that interferes with daily life
🔹Severe fatigue and tissue fragility
Managing Your Journey:
There is currently no disease-specific "cure" for EDS or HSD, so management is all about addressing your unique symptoms. Physiotherapy plays a key role in your multidisciplinary care team to help improve joint stability, manage pain, and prevent injury.
Isabelle Harris at our Peak Performance Sports Physiotherapy clinic, has a special interest in treating and supporting the "bendy" community by providing informed, patient-centered care. Whether you have a confirmed diagnosis or are experiencing symptomatic hypermobility, we are here to listen and help you move more safely.
