🔥✈️ Some firefighting action at Toowoomba Airport today!

Two of Precision Aerial's AT-802A Air Tractors, VH-SDJ and VH-NFY, were seen operating out of Toowoomba on aerial firefighting duties .
The two aircraft throughout the afternoon headed out on water bombing runs and returned for quick turnarounds.

It is always great to see these aircraft up close and the important role they play in supporting crews on the ground. 👏

Well done Marco! Third generation warbird pilot, and all three have flown at our Aerodrome.

Well done Marco! Third generation warbird pilot, and all three have flown at our Aerodrome.

Congratulations to Marco for his first solo in our Harvard VH-SNJ, the first warbird on the Australian Warbird Register.
Marco is the third generation of the Zuccoli-Handley family to fly SNJ, with Guido leading the way, followed by Matt (who proudly instructed his son).

Big Wins for the Toowoomba City Aerodrome!

Last week, Council has confirmed outcomes that are a direct result of the tireless advocacy of our committee and the support of all Aerodrome stakeholders.

✅ 16 leases renewed with 30-year terms (10x10x10) – giving leaseholders certainty and securing the Aerodrome for generations to come.
✅ Aerodrome closure clause removed – a clear commitment from Council that our Aerodrome is here to stay.
✅ No operating expenses passed onto leaseholders – protecting us from over $1.2 million in unfair costs.

Landing fees will also be set at $13.50/tonne for aircraft under 5.7t and $16.50/tonne for those above – a more balanced outcome than first proposed.

These wins didn’t happen by chance. They came from months of advocacy, persistence, and standing united as stakeholders. While not everything went our way, we’ve secured the most important outcomes: certainty, fairness, and a strong future for the Aerodrome.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported this fight – and especially to our committee for their tireless work. We also want to acknowledge Hugh Dunne and his team at TRC, and Councillors Carol, Melissa Taylor, Edwina Farquhar, and James O’Shea for their efforts in helping achieve this outcome.

Together, we’ve made a real difference! 💪✈️

Dear CEO, Mayor and Councillors,

We write to formally object to the proposed increase in fees and charges at Toowoomba City Aerodrome (TCA), as outlined in the recent ISG Committee Review and AEC Benchmarking Report.

TCA is a community-based ASSET that plays a vital role in supporting local aviation, emergency services, and regional economic development.

The proposed landing fees—$15 per tonne for aircraft ≤5.7 tonnes and $18 per tonne for aircraft >5.7 tonnes—now EXCEED those charged at nearby large-scale facilities, which have vastly superior infrastructure and services.

TRC is now raising fees to untenable levels. This raises serious concerns about the rationale behind the fee structure and its alignment with Council’s stated goals of rebuilding trust and attracting new users to TCA.

We note the following key issues:

Excessive Fee Increases: The changes already introduced on 1 July 2024 represent increases of over 50% for some operators. This is not sustainable for community and commercial users alike.

Benchmarking Misuse: Benchmarking, as presented in the AEC report, is not an agreed or legislated method for determining commercial fees for local government assets. The Local Government Act 2009 is clear:

o Section 97 permits cost-recovery fees only where they reflect the actual cost of delivering a regulatory service.
o Section 262(3)(c) allows commercial charges only when Council is supplying a service or facility—not when acting in a regulatory capacity.

Misalignment with Comparable Aerodromes: The AEC benchmarking shows TCA’s fees are now higher than many comparable aerodromes, including those with more extensive infrastructure and services.
For example, Archerfield Airport charges $18 per tonne regardless of aircraft size, yet offers significantly more in terms of facilities and access.

Community Impact: These fee increases risk undermining the viability of local aviation businesses, emergency services, and community groups. They also threaten the broader economic growth of the region by discouraging aviation activity at TCA.

Lack of Consultation: While lessees were consulted regarding weight categories, broader consultation with affected users regarding the fee increases has been insufficient. The community deserves a transparent and inclusive process.

AEC Review: It is a timely reminder that the AEC Review (which TRC requested) lists 20 recommendations for TRC to implement, targeting fractured relationships, poor lease management, and a lack of promotion for our Aerodrome.

The failure to implement the 2018 Master Plan and refusal to consider our Aerodrome as an asset shows TRC’s severe lack of understanding as to the value of our industry.

Considering these concerns, we respectfully request that Council:

o Reconsider the proposed fee increases;
o Engage in meaningful consultation with all stakeholders;
o Ensure compliance with the Local Government Act 2009;
o Restore TCA’s role as a community-focused, economically enabling asset;
o Implement the recommendations as per the AEC Review.

While I have a prescribed conflict of interest regarding the Toowoomba City Aerodrome, I’ve been consistent in my public view: The aerodrome is a critical community and economic asset.

It should be leveraged as an economic hub — not treated like a purely commercial cost centre.

The recent AEC review confirmed what many of us have been saying for years:
☑️ Relationships between Council and stakeholders are fractured.
☑️ Lease management has been poor, with opportunities for more hangars ignored.
☑️ Fees are set to match bigger airports, when they should be attracting more operators.
☑️ There’s no clear, coordinated plan to grow aviation in Toowoomba.

This aerodrome isn’t just a patch of tarmac — it’s home to vital services like LifeFlight, the Queensland Rural Fire Service, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service - Queensland Section, all of which save lives in our region.

We had a masterplan drafted in 2018, yet five years on, nothing significant has been achieved.

We also see no revenue from Pittsworth or Millmerran airstrips — a missed opportunity to bolster regional aviation.

The aerodrome can and should be a driver for jobs, investment, and connectivity. I fully support the work of the TCCA and the Advisory Committee (Cr C Taylor and Cr Edwina) in pushing for this facility to thrive.

It’s time we stopped treating the aerodrome as a side note — and started managing it like the strategic regional asset it is.

On Tuesday Paul, Jamie and Nic in conjunction with Jetfix Avionics hosted St Mary's and St Ursula's students who are currently studying aviation. The students were shown through the workshops and demonstrated some of the day-to-day tasks of the hangar and engine shop, including landing gear retractions and MPI. They also had the opportunity to talk to engineers to gain a better understanding of what is involved in working in aviation and see what Toowoomba City Aerodrome has to offer the industry. We are always excited to see the younger generation showing an interest in aviation and keen to help them learn more about a career in this field.

TRC’s Mismanagement of TCA Is Undermining Local Growth

TRC has failed to appropriately leverage the economic potential of the Toowoomba City Aerodrome (TCA), despite there being strong demand for additional hangar space and identified opportunities contained in the Master Plan.

Instead of actively developing this strategic asset, Council has applied the Code of Competitive Conduct (COCC) in a way that restricts commercial activity, stifles private investment, and discourages growth — all under the guise of “fair competition.”
Let’s be clear: the COCC is meant to prevent councils from gaining unfair advantages over the private sector, not to justify inaction or block legitimate development on public land.

By misapplying the COCC, Council is treating the Aerodrome like a liability, rather than recognising it as a thriving aviation hub with enormous potential.
This is a classic case of policy used as an excuse for inaction, and it’s costing our region jobs, investment, and innovation.

"TRC has failed to appropriately leverage the economic potential of TCA, despite there being strong demand for additional hangar space and identified opportunities contained in the Master Plan.”

TCA has room for at least 4 new hangars in the next two years.
Demand is real.
But uncertainty, red tape, and lease delays are pushing investors away.
We’re not out of space—we’re out of support.
