Struggle to focus—for yourself or your child? 😓
Tasks that require long periods of attention can feel impossible with ADHD. And sadly, many people with ADHD are labelled lazy… and may even start to believe it. But that’s not the truth.

✨ You’re not lazy. You’re wired differently.
ADHD brains are more sensitive to distractions and crave stimulation. But with the right strategies, focus can be trained—and even enjoyed.

Here are 3 powerful tools to help kids and adults with ADHD improve focus and follow-through:

🔹 Outsmart Yourself 🤔💪
Remove high-stim distractions like phones or games. No pressure to work—just block the dopamine sources. Your brain will naturally turn toward focus.

🔹 Observance 👀🧘‍♂️
You are not your thoughts. Notice distractions, detach, and let them pass without grabbing on.

🔹 Increase Engagement 🚀🎧
Make tasks more stimulating. Use music, fidget tools, or turn it into a game.

💡 Try one today. Focus isn’t about willpower—it’s about strategy.

Most escalations don’t come out of nowhere — even if it looks like they do.

They usually start small: stress builds, needs go unmet, early signs get missed.
When we understand this, we stop reacting to “escalations”…
And start responding to what’s really going on before reaching a crisis point.

3 Practical Prevention Tools:

1. Know the Early Signs
2. Have a Plan, Not a Panic
3. Connect Before Correct

Prevention is always better than reaction.

Your tone is more powerful than you think.
In behaviour support, especially with individuals who have experienced trauma, the way we speak matters just as much as what we say.

This post explores how tone of voice can either escalate or de-escalate situations—and why a trauma-informed approach begins before behaviour even occurs.

Whether you’re a support worker, therapist, educator, or parent, these simple reminders can make a big difference.

🧠 Behaviour is Communication – Are You Listening?

Every behaviour—especially those we find challenging—is a form of communication. Instead of reacting, we need to pause and ask:
👉 What is this person trying to tell us?

In Positive Behaviour Support, behaviour is seen as functional—it serves a purpose. Whether it’s to avoid a task, gain attention, access something important, or meet a sensory need, there’s always a reason behind the action.

✅ Behaviour isn’t random.
✅ The same action can have different meanings.
✅ Understanding the ‘why’ helps us support the ‘how’.

At Renew, we help decode the message behind behaviour so support can be more effective, respectful, and empowering.

✨ Quality of life is at the heart of behaviour support. ✨

Behaviour Support Practitioners don’t just focus on reducing behaviours of concern—they work to empower individuals to live fulfilling, independent, and meaningful lives.

Every person’s quality of life looks different, and it’s not up to others to decide what that should be. Instead, behaviour support helps by:

✅ Addressing barriers that impact well-being
✅ Building skills to support independence and communication
✅ Creating supportive environments that foster success
✅ Enhancing social & emotional well-being

When quality of life improves, the need for behaviours of concern naturally decreases. 🌿

📢 Why Do People Engage in Challenging Behaviour?

Challenging behaviours don’t happen without reason—they serve a purpose. Understanding the why behind these behaviours helps us respond with empathy and effective support.

People with disabilities may engage in challenging behaviour to:

✅ Gain access to something they want (e.g., a toy, food, or activity).
✅ Avoid or escape an unwanted situation (e.g., a noisy environment or difficult task).
✅ Seek social attention (whether positive or negative).
✅ Gain sensory stimulation (self-soothing behaviours like rocking or hand-flapping).
✅ Find relief from pain or discomfort (e.g., sensory sensitivities, headaches, or gastrointestinal distress).

By identifying the reason behind a behaviour, we can provide better strategies to support individuals in a way that meets their needs. 💡

📢 Preventing Escalations: The Power of Predictability in Community Outings 🏙️

For individuals with ASD, unexpected changes, sensory overload, or emotional distress can lead to meltdowns or escalations when out in the community. The key to reducing anxiety and promoting confidence? Predictability.

In this post, we explore how step-by-step planning and self-regulation strategies can make outings smoother and more enjoyable. Learn how to:

✅ Create a structured plan for outings
✅ Use visual schedules to provide clarity
✅ Teach self-regulation strategies for unexpected changes

By making environments more predictable—or building predictability within the individual—you can reduce stress, foster independence, and prevent escalations.
