50 years of NAIDOC and the Carbal mob packed every moment with Strength, Vision & Legacy.

From damper lessons in Grand Central to sizzling BBQs in Toowoomba and Warwick, from yarns looking over Meewah to jarjums' dancing and a LOT of face painting, our communities showed up, shared culture and carried the torch for the next generation.

Big thanks to every Elder, volunteer, partner and deadly little artist who made these memories. Here’s to the next 50 years of walking together, proud and strong. ❤️💛🖤

Warwick Crew celebrated NAIDOC a little earlier with the students at Warwick East State School. Rock painting on the tables, face paint on the cheeks and big smiles all around. Thanks to the school for hosting us and the jarjums bringing art to life ❤️💛🖤

NAIDOC at Grand Central hit different when the Elders rolled up their sleeves and showed the kids how to whip up damper.

Flour on little hands, yarns in the air, and that fresh-baked smell filling the shops. After fifty years of NAIDOC our mob is still proving culture lives best when it is shared.

Big thanks to the Grand Central crew for the space. This is what Strength, Vision & Legacy looks like in real time ❤️💛🖤

NAIDOC Week Yarning & Damper Making with Our Elders 🖤💛❤️
As part of NAIDOC Week celebrations, our valued partner Grand Central helped us host a special gathering where our incredible Elders shared stories, culture, and their damper-making skills, passing down generations of knowledge the traditional way.

🔥 Did you know? The word “damper” comes from the way the fire was “dampened” to cook it in the ashes, a clever technique to bake bread in the coals without burning it. How deadly is that?
This week is all about celebrating the wisdom and strength of our Elders, the true keepers of culture, language, and connection.

❤️💛🖤 Deadly day with Wilsonton Heights Neighbourhood Centre at Wine Drive Park

Our Carbal mob kept the BBQ sizzling, brushed on some facepaint, and got to watch the Mura Biri Guuru Dancers

Fifty years of NAIDOC is about Strength Vision Legacy, and seeing the next generation front and centre made it real

Our Story

Carbal originated from the efforts of Aboriginal people to establish a culturally safe and secure health service in Toowoomba that could comprehensively address health needs. Carbal Medical Centre (Carbal) is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Health Care Organisation (ATSICCHO). Carbal is the tribal totem (carpet snake) for the Traditional Owners of the land on which Darling Downs resides - the Jarrowair and Giabal people. Carbal is continuously reviewing processes and practices to ensure that the client’s journey through our organisation meets the medical, health, social and cultural needs of our clients. We have a dedicated multidisciplinary team of individuals who work hard to try and close the gap that exists between the health outcomes in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population and the rest of contemporary Australian society. Carbal strives to provide ‘Excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary health care in a Caring and culturally aware environment’. Apart from the full service GP clinics in Toowoomba and Warwick, Carbal delivers a large number of health programs on behalf of the State and Commonwealth governments. In line with our accreditation bodies, Carbal strives to provide ‘Excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care in a Caring and Confidential Environment’.
