In the treatment of acne, it is important to differentiate between hormonal and fungal acne to identify the cause and ensure treatment is being targeted precisely.
Hormonal acne is influenced by hormonal fluctuations, specifically an increase in androgens like testosterone, producing excess oil. This type of acne typically manifests in areas such as the jawline, chin and cheeks with deep, cystic and inflamed lesions.
Fungal acne is caused by an overgrowth of yeast called Malassezia on the skin, which leads to inflammation of hair follicles and acne-like bumps unrelated to hormonal fluctuations. They often appear as tiny red or white itchy bumps, usually found near the hair line.
