👣 Did you know the band of tissue that runs under your foot is called the plantar fascia? When it becomes irritated or inflamed (a condition known as plantar fasciitis), it can cause sharp heel pain—especially with your first steps in the morning.

✅ The good news? It’s highly treatable.
Common treatments include:
✨ Supportive footwear
✨ Stretching exercises
✨ Gentle massage or rolling the arch of your foot on a ball to ease tension
✨ Activity modifications
✨ Orthotics or shockwave therapy in more stubborn cases

Don’t ignore persistent heel pain—early treatment (including simple at-home care) can prevent it from becoming a long-term problem.

Podiatrist’s tip: Enjoy them for short-term wear, but swap to supportive slippers for all-day comfort and healthier feet this winter!

Gout is a form of arthritis caused by a build-up of uric acid in the blood. This leads to tiny crystals forming in the joints, causing irritation, inflammation, and severe pain. It affects about 1 in 200 people, more often men, typically appearing in middle age or running in families.

The classic symptom is waking at night with intense, throbbing pain and swelling in one big toe. Attacks often last a few hours and may not return for months.

You can lower your risk by maintaining a healthy weight, reducing alcohol and sugary drinks, and ensuring plenty of Vitamin C in your diet.

Treatment includes anti-inflammatory medication, elevating the foot, and applying ice to reduce swelling. We can help by adapting footwear with orthoses, prescribing made-to-measure shoes, and providing padding or shields to relieve pressure and protect your feet.

No! While tired feet can be expected after a long day, ongoing pain is a sign something isn’t right. It could be linked to your footwear, posture, work surfaces, or an underlying condition like plantar fasciitis or arthritis.

Don’t ignore persistent discomfort—a podiatrist can assess the cause, provide tailored treatment, and help prevent it from worsening.

We’ve made it through the worst of winter… only one month to go! ☃️

Boot season often makes people think it’s fine to neglect their feet, but just because those tootsies are tucked away doesn’t mean they don’t need some care and attention. 👣

In fact, it’s more important than ever to take care of your feet and toes during the winter season, when things like cold weather, damp socks and heated air can lead to cracked skin, fungal infections, "winter heels," and maybe even frostbite.

Follow these Winter feet tips:

➪ keep your feet clean
➪ moisturise your skin
➪ use proper socks and footwear
➪ remove wet socks and shoes quickly

If you're experiencing persistent foot pain that hasn’t responded to other treatments, injection therapy may offer relief. At Surf Coast Podiatry, we can assess whether it’s right for you and provide safe, targeted treatment to help you move comfortably again.

There are three main types of injections commonly used, with cortisone (steroid) injections being the most widely applied.

Steroid injections work in two key ways:

• Anti-inflammatory relief – they help break the cycle of pain and inflammation, which is especially helpful in the feet where complete rest is difficult.

• Tissue reduction – steroids can reduce the bulk of inflamed or thickened soft tissue, relieving pressure and pain.

These injections are often used to treat:

• Painful joints (e.g. arthritis)
• Bursitis
• Nerve pain or impingement
• Trigger points
• Post-surgical scar pain

In addition to steroids, medical-grade silicone injections may be used to restore lost natural padding—particularly in the ball of the foot. This is beneficial for:

• Loss of fibro-fatty tissue
• Painful corns
• Chronic metatarsalgia (pain in the forefoot)

🩰 Dancing en pointe puts incredible strain on the small bones, joints, and soft tissues of your feet. Without proper care, issues like sesamoiditis, thickened nails, corns, or developing deformities such as hammer toes can arise—and worsen if ignored.

Your technique matters, but so does your foot health. A podiatrist can help prevent long-term damage, manage pain, and keep you strong, balanced, and stage-ready.

Don’t wait for an injury to slow you down—get expert support at Surf Coast Podiatry.

👣 Podiatrist Tips for Healthy Feet at the Pool:

• Always wear thongs or pool shoes around the pool and in showers.
• Dry your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes.
• Moisturise after swimming to combat dryness from chlorine.
• Don’t ignore persistent itching, peeling, or unusual skin changes—early treatment prevents bigger issues.

🏊‍♀️ Love swimming? So do we—but don’t forget to protect your feet at the pool! Chlorine can dry out your skin, and warm, damp areas are prime spots for fungal infections and plantar warts.

COMMON CONDITION | Achilles tendonitis is inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which attaches the calf muscles to the heel bone. In most cases, Achilles tendonitis is a type of overuse injury and is more common in younger people. Professional and weekend athletes can suffer from Achilles tendonitis, but it is also a common overuse injury in people not involved in sport.

Symptoms of Achilles tendonitis include:
• pain in the back of the heel
• difficulty walking – sometimes the pain makes walking impossible
• swelling, tenderness and warmth of the Achilles tendon

Depending on the nature of your injury, you may need to:
• keep your weight off your ankle (such as by using crutches)
• do stretching and strengthening exercises
• tape your foot and heel
• use orthotics
