😴 “My child is a great sleeper — they do 12 hours a night!”

That might sound reassuring… but in reality, children who need excessively long sleep often aren’t getting restorative sleep.

💡 When sleep is disrupted by breathing problems, the brain never fully rests. The body tries to make up for it by demanding marathon sleep sessions.

👉 A truly well-rested child wakes refreshed after a normal night’s sleep, not 12+ hours.

If your child needs unusually long sleep to function, it’s worth checking their airway and sleep quality — not just celebrating the quantity.

Enlarged tonsils may look like they’re “doing their job” — but research shows they often don’t provide the immune protection we expect.

Instead, enlarged tonsils can:

🦋 Obstruct the airway
🦋 Contribute to snoring and mouth breathing
🦋 Be linked to sleep apnea
🦋 Lead to recurring infections and inflammation

When the airway is compromised, overall health, sleep quality, and daily function are affected. Myofunctional therapy works alongside medical care to address these patterns and support better breathing, sleep, and wellness.

👉 Follow Chrysalis Orofacial for more education on airway health and how myofunctional therapy can help.

🌼 Hello, Spring! 🌼

It’s that time of year again when the flowers bloom and, unfortunately, so do those pesky springtime allergies! 🌷 If you want to combat those allergens, it’s time to keep your mouth closed and your nostrils open. By breathing through your nose, you can filter out what’s bothering your airways and contributing to your allergies.

At my clinic, we focus on retraining mouth breathing and encouraging the natural nasal breathing we should all be using from birth. Let’s embrace the season while keeping those allergies at bay!

Check out MyoBreatheEase Clinic for more information on how we can help you breathe better. 🌿💚

CPAP - Why its important to switch to a NASAL mask 👃Choosing a CPAP nasal mask over a full face mask can offer several benefits, especially if you’re focused on promoting nasal breathing. Here are some key reasons:

1. **Encourages Nasal Breathing**: A nasal mask allows for natural nasal breathing, which can help keep your airways open more effectively than mouth breathing. Nasal breathing is generally more beneficial for overall respiratory function.

2. **Comfort and Fit**: Many users find nasal masks to be lighter and less intrusive, making them more comfortable for extended wear. This can lead to better compliance with CPAP therapy.

3. **Reduced Air Leakage**: Nasal masks often result in less air leakage compared to full face masks, which can enhance the effectiveness of therapy and provide a more stable pressure.

4. **Easier to Retrain Breathing**: By using a nasal mask, you can more easily focus on retraining your breathing patterns to favor nasal inhalation. This can be part of a broader strategy to reduce CPAP dependency over time.

If you’re looking to ultimately reduce CPAP usage, transitioning to nasal breathing and using a nasal mask can be effective steps in that direction. However, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional to ensure that any changes align with your specific needs and treatment goals.

💪 Muscle Spotlight: Lateral Pterygoid

📍 Where is it?
Located deep near your jaw joint, running horizontally from the skull to the TMJ area.

🧠 What does it do? The Lateral Pterygoid helps:

➡️ Open your jaw
➡️ Move the jaw side to side
➡️ Control and stabilize the TMJ during movement

💥 Why It Matters:

✅ Essential for wide jaw opening
✅ Allows for side-to-side grinding motion
✅ Protects the joint during chewing and talking
✅ Helps maintain proper jaw tracking

🚨 When it’s tight or strained:

❌ TMJ clicking or popping
❌ Pain when opening your mouth
❌ Jaw shifting off-center
❌ Discomfort when chewing tougher foods

🧰 OMT Goals:

👍 Encourage relaxed jaw opening
😎 Improve side-to-side movement
🎉 Reduce clenching and protect the TMJ
👏 Coordinate jaw and tongue movements

🎉 Fun Fact:

The Lateral Pterygoid is the only jaw muscle that opens the mouth - all the others close it. Without it, you’d have a hard time saying “ahhh!”

Did you know that by age 5, a child’s facial structure is already 85% of its adult size?

This isn’t just an interesting fact — it’s a wake-up call. Craniofacial growth is happening rapidly in the early years, and if it’s going in the wrong direction, waiting to address it can mean missing the window for optimal development.

Many kids show signs of dysfunctional growth patterns early on — mouth breathing, poor sleep, snoring, dark under eyes, crowded teeth — but these red flags are too often dismissed as “normal.”

The truth is: they’re not normal — they’re common. And left unaddressed, they can affect airway health, sleep quality, behavior, and even cognitive development.

That’s why tools like the Fairest-6 — a simple screening tool to catch these signs early, when intervention is most effective and least invasive.

If you’re noticing these signs, don’t wait to ask questions. Depending on the child’s age and symptoms, support may come from:
• An airway-focused pediatric dentist
• A ENT
• A myofunctional therapist
• Or a speech-language pathologist (SLP) trained in oral motor skills and feeding

Early, collaborative care can make all the difference.
